i am going to be replacing the cat on my friends 96 xlt 4.0 4x4 explorer. it doesnt look possible to buy a genaric cat and fab it up like i did on my s10. i have been looking around on different sites for cats and all i can find are ones that say for all states exept california (where we live). do they say this just because it is illegal for someone to replace their catylatic convertor without having a licenced shop do it, or is it a totally different part that wont work on a california explorer. thanks

call the Muffler warehouse( in sac)...i don't have the number on me but i bought 2 cats for my Bronco from them and i spent $100 even....i belive they were from the company "catco" if you find there high flow cats anywhere they work great and give you like 40% more flow then stock covertors....you can also find Catco's in the Summit catalog for like $55 a piece i believe....

why does it have to be factory replacement? ive seen others on the internet that look like the same exact cat but they say not for california. would one work if i bought one? or is there a very small difference that i cant see that would make it not work. i dont care if its not 100% legal, once its in no one is going to be able to tell that it was ever replaced unless they take an hour looking at it with a magnifying glass. thanks

im thinking the non California cats might not clean as much pollutents, being California has the stricktest smog laws in the in states...and the others may just be a type of "pre cat" that you would use...i was told to order a pre cat and those cost a arm and a leg..i simply bought two universal cats and welded them biotches in.....worked for me...:D

the reason that you can't do a catalytic converter in california is because the explorer has dual cats.
 I think they only have one. if they do have 2 the first is a precat and does not matter. with the obd2 it is just law that the cat be replaced with a factory or remanufactured factory catalitic converter. sometimes the after markets will work but you may get a check engine light to pop on because of it. cost is not a arm and a leg, just 500 usually:flipoff2: they are the same inside though. and a explorer it is just a little more difficult to get a normal high flow cat on because of the flange, and the oval shape of the pipe going to the cat. if you do put a aftermarket cat on a obd2 car and the smog check does the visual check to make sure it has a cat, and realizes you have a aftermarket cat, depending on the smog tech, or the type of day the particular smog tech is having, that is a fail.

Quick call to the ford dealer here in GA told me that if it has a slush box then its a differrent one for CA emissions if you are a stick shifter then it uses the same one as a non CA emissions vehicle. Dumb luck has it that here anyway the CA emission cat was 100 cheaper only 600 instead of 700.
