Extreme Willys Wagons and Trucks

Ok I can't take it anymore, so post up... (inspired by Pdaddy's post)

All you fellows out there with Wagons, Trucks, or Willys other than CJ's post up you hard work. A pic and description. I want this thread to help others that are still working on the forgotten cousins of the Jeep.

I have a 1959 Willys Wagon mated to a 1976 Wagoneer chassis. Running Dana 44's front and rear, 401V8, TH 400, 4" of Lift, 35" Dunlop MT's, 12000 lb winch and more to come, but not yet finished.

There should be a guy in Yuba City with a bad ass truggy too.

Pic's coming shortly.

If we get good enough response I can create a mailing list for those that want to assist or talk shop without dogging the Pirate Board.

Yeah we're going to need see more of that. :smokin:
Thanks for the kind words. I have a build log on Old Willys Forum under the same username. I lengthened the cab 15", built a window from a wagon I cut up. Now with the 15" + 5" that was behind where I cut, I now have 20" behind the door. It's going onto a shortened suburban frame with a D60, 14bff, 205, 4l80e and a 6.0 lq4. Slow going because I'm on a tight budget but I'll get there.
Sounds like an AWESOME build!!!

Thanks for mentioning the Old Willys Forum; we have a '49 Willys P/U and I was unaware of that resource.
Getting closer and closer to finishing this up. Built 5.3 and 4l60e, 3 link front with coilovers and a dana 44

I just learned about this thread. Here's the specs on my '59 Pick-up as it sits right now:

283 ('63 Vette donor) with TPI from a '91 Z-28
SM-420
Dana-18/20 hybrid
Ford 9-inch front and rear (4.86:1) Detroit in the rear and TruTrac in the front

Future projects include doing away with the front leaf springs in favor of an early Bronco 3-link (I'll more than likely wrist the front axle at that time as well), installing the Double-Torque gear splitter/overdrive (basically an older, cast-iron case version of the A/A Ranger), and an Atlas 3.0...
More details please. Love the color on the pickup.

i saw on the old willys forum he had to sell the truck and hes had no more updates,
I don't get on here much anymore. Mostly just lurked back in the day, absorbing everything I could at the time. A lot of projects come and gone since then, but my current Wagon project is getting to the point that I thought I would share a bit. It's a 1960. Top is chopped 3 inches, windshield dropped into the cowl to even up the lower horizontal line with the side windows. Hood cut about 3 inches also, and fenders 'high-lined' to match the body seam on the side. The entire floor was chopped out and channeled down over a 2015 JKU frame. Then I made all new beadrolled floor panels, firewall, dash, and wheel tubs. The cage is fully recessed into the B-pillar to try to keep a little bit of shoulder room. Has PRP seats and harnesses, and a fold-and-tumble CJ seat in the back. I've got a Rugged Radios system with bluetooth intercom and a Maxbilt console. For the price and time required, I just couldn't duplicate the console, so I bought it instead of building one. Floor and interior walls are coated with Lizard Skin SC and CI for sound and heat. Running an onboard-air system from Viair with a little 2 gallon tank in the back.

The drivetrain is a 2006 LQ9 and 4L65E, with an Atlas 2spd transfer case. I was even able to make the cruise-control work, with the LQ9's TAC module. I did all the wiring harness and programming myself. Body harness was a 27-circuit system from Painless. Axles are Dana 60's from a Dodge, 5.13 gears, Yukon Grizzly in the back and Zip in the front, 4340 Shafts, 35-spline Yukon hubs. I did a regular triangulated 4-link in the rear, and a 4-link with panhard in the front. Ram assist steering with the big PSC JK box. King 2.5 remote reservoir shocks and King bumps with RockCrawler triple-rate JK springs. A lot of the tabs and brackets, as well as the diff covers, came from RuffStuff. Rear bumper is from an old Dodge farm truck. I cut a foot out of each side, then used a TMR bearing pivot to make a swing-out carrier that holds a full-size 40" Trepador spare. On the rear tailgate, I cut several inches out of it, and then remade the pivot, so that I could keep a full-size rear window. Doesn't really matter much at this point, because I can't see a damn thing with that big tire back there. :) Front bumper is just the factory Wagon bumper with a foot cut out of the middle. The mirrors are some old west-coast truck units that a buddy picked up at a swap meet. I cut down the brackets so they would fit the profile of the door, then bolted them on with some nutserts. Rear tail-lights are frenched-in units from a 90's Cadillac. They fit the body profile so well. I love 'em.

Still on my to-do list is making front window channels and figuring out a way to use a single piece of glass (or Lexan, as I'm bad about busting glass) instead of the wing-windows. Reworking the doors so they close better. Getting some interior panels made to close out the sides and doors. Finishing up the rotopax fuel-can 'pockets' in the front fenders, and running boards from the front fenders to the rear. Working out a storage system for the rear cargo area (This rig's main function is long-distance camping/trail riding.), and a removeable roof rack. I also want to add air-conditioning. A lot of little details that still need to be done. I'll see if I can get a few more pics loaded here.

Here are a few shots of it over the last couple years. It's totally road-worthy now, and I actually drove it from Illinois to Colorado this Summer to do some trails out there. Unfortunately, I got sick the first night we camped, and had to return home. But it hammers along pretty well for an old rag. :)

Wow! Incredible build! I really dig the body proportion changes you made. Great job adapting the body to the jk frame and setting up the new drivetrain and suspension! The interior sheet metal is great. Looks tuff on the 40’s! The overall design is really cool! Your build is really ambitious, and you pulled it off well- amazing work!
Great looking trail rig and very capable too!
I have a write up on doing one piece door glass that may help you.
