I have heard that if I take out my belt driven fan and replace it with an electric one that I could see a 10 HP gain. Is this true or have any of you done this?

it has to get the power from somewhere...

If it isn't mechanical power, then it will be electrical power(which requires mechanical power)...so regardless of how you spin the fan, it still takes power....I don't see haw you can pin a figure on it and say you are gaining HP by changing WHERE that power comes from.

Perhaps NOT running a fan may gain a couple, but who can do that on a trail rig?

You're not gaining HP, just reclaiming it. it takes more HP and more importantly torque to run a mechanical fan than it does to run the alt. However if your clutch fan is working properly it should not cause to much drag. Some people who switch to the electric fan claim that there engine will rev up faster. This is a true statement since most of the time the elec fan is not running, but when it is the alt. will cause the drag.
I run an electric fan in my 85 extra cab and like the fact that I have the ability to control when the fan turns on and off. I also do notice that seat of the pants increase in power. Hope this helps.

What electric fan are you running? I'd like to switch but I'm more interested in a junk yard swap than a $$$black magic or the like...

Thanx,

I used a 2 speed from a lincon continental. I had to cut it down a little but it fits the rad great. I robbed a fan switch from a toy tercel and wired my own relay to it. You can get the same fan from a taurus.27$ at pnp with the gaurantee

Go to the tech section here on pirate, and read the article Lance did on his Ford fan. Comes out of the MarkVIII, Taurus, Continental, etc. Buddy of mine has one on his Mustang (that he paid $300 for instead of pulling from a yard) and they move a **TON** of air. Way more than the Black Magic fan, and it'll be a lot cheaper from a yard. The only hangup is that spike about ~30A when first starting up, so you won't be wiring it with speaker wire and a 5A fuse.

most of the fans i hve seen require more than 5A.
my aftermarket runs a 25A so it must pull aroud 20+ at times.
i cant say there is a significant HP gain, but you notice, that and the fact of cooler motor and less noise from that fucking mechanical fan and clutch.

I'm sorry if you took it like you described.........I meant nothing close to that. I asked basically the same question a while back, I was just giving the answer I was given. And as for respect, I have a lot of respect for people including YOU! I have talked to you a few times thru PM's and such, I was just kidding on a level of friendship.........I did not mean anything sarcastic by it.

Dave

EDIT.........This is the thread I was referring to, and nobody said anything about the 4cyl fan being the same.

Just get an escort fan, 2 speed pretty much bolt on to your toyota truck. I believe like an late 80s and early 90s escorts should work. Covers almost the whole radiator and you just have to cut out a little bit for the power steering pump
