I finally completed the project and took the truck down to frank raines on sunday to wheel and i must give a big thanks to OTT industries, the sm420 works great first gear is awesome!!!! and it works suprisingly well behind my tired 20r on the highway. thanks to everyone who helped me out. Matt!!!!

any pics of the thing in the truck? did you lose the heaterbox or were you able to bend the shifter underneath?

I'm considering this same thing, sounds like a great setup.

I am really hoping to put that adapter in my jeep so I can run toy axles under it. Only issue is length. Currently the jeep has a model 18 behind the 420, can't remember if that required a new mainshaft on the 420 - hope I can just unbolt it and bolt on the adapter and toy tcase. With the short wheelbase I just hope I can make drivelines work..

Brandon......I fit the 420 to Toy case in my LJ80 4 years ago (with a whopping 78" wheelbase) and I had a 20" long rear driveshaft

of course if you want to talk about early Jeeps with Looooooong drivetrains
My brother has a 48 Willys with dual transmissions (SM 420 mated to a wide ratio T19/Dana20)
he still actually has a rear driveshaft too............ <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

So Airzuki I dont want to sound dumb but could you email me or post me more info on the sm420 to toy bellhousing. What clutch to run? What about indexing? Package deal for toy bell to 420 and 420 to toy t-case combined price? I want to compare to marlin cost to get 197 to 1 with your stuff or 235 to 1 with theres.So buy two adapters from you or one adapter and t-case gears from them? Price canadian if I pk em up?Im just south of the boarder in Tacoma. Id sure appreciate it thanks <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

So Ill try typing before I reply this time. So ecvMatt how is the gearing on the street? I am thinking of this conversion and I just posted another similar topic as you posted this. I am just concerned with it going from a 5sp to basicely a 3sp. Does the toy motor have enough torque to carry you to the next gear or are you having any bogging problems on the street?

since i moved i dont have a computer so my replies take a few days but peoples main concern with the kit seems to be driving on the street, i i have found that the gap between third and fourth is a little big so i really hafta wind out third, my truck had a four speed in it originally so i never had a fifth to make a comparison. it is very similar to driving an fj40 now(with two less cylinders) but IT IS NOT MY DAILY DRIVER so i am not terribly concerned with how it does around town, and with a 275k 20r it was never really a highway cruisin machine anyhow. having gone through three toyota four speed gearboxes i decided it was time to start breaking some other part.

oh and no heater, there really isnt any way to fit it i have a 3 in body lift and still barely cleared the floor with the top of thr tranny

The bellhousing adapter is a machined plate that indexes the 420 properly on a W56 series toyota bellhousing. This modification requires the use of the stock stamped steel fork from the W56 and also requires that the rectangular hole the clutch fork fits through be enlarged slightly.
The kit comes with a new pilot bearing,clutch disc and all fasteners.
The original toyota pressure plate is used.

The indexing feature of the transfercase adapter allows the front output to be raised to the level of the bottom of the 420 allowing a flat skidplate/crossmember

Just assumed I have to call I guess. Now I am thinking I will just go with an offset wagoneer axle instead of the centered toy diff. Someday I'll swap to a toy tcase though - is there any more writups on the net like maybe BC4X4 or something?
