crested a hill Saturday wheeling and my FJ60 jumped from 4H to 2wd when I let off the gas and the rig surged forward. No problems since and I drove it all day, I was just wondering if "jogging" the drivetrain caused this or of the gears in the case are excessivly worn and allowed this.

you have the same problem i have. except my 60 is possessed...i am on my fifth removal of the PS pump right now!

here is what happens:

1 - your PS pump leaks (or has leaked)
2 - it drips on your smog pump (will eventually kill it, trust me)
3 - drips off smog pump onto motor mount.
4 - ATF will eat the rubber in the motor mount.
5 - running 4WD provides enough torque to break the motor mount.
6 - your engine moves a little bit while in 4WD causing you to pop out of 4WD (usually at the worst possible time).
7 - you may also experience your fan hitting the shroud under extreme articulation.

What you need to do is fix the source of the problem for good FIRST!!!! otherwise you will keep wasting your time like me tearing it apart (which isn't any fun).

find out if your pump still leaks (or if the reservoir leaks) i think my reservoir is the culprit, so I just brazed mine shut!). i am going to be putting it all back together this weekend, and I'll let you know how it goes...

here is a little bit of my saga:

Thats funny as hell (not your saga) but the chain of events. Mine matches almost exactly.

Replaced P.S. pump

Smog pump smoked belt once(bought but have not in stalled new smog pump)

under tight turns or surges the transfer will jump out of 4WD.

I dont have a leak anymore and I've never heard the fan hit the shroud so I'm hoping the mount is O.K. and maybe just the rubber is damaged. So how the hell do you repair the mount properly what has to come out

i am pretty sure your mount is toast. just so you know it is just the rubber part that is toast, the metal is fine (the rubber just separated from the metal like in the picture on my web site). to replace it you need to rip everything out: ps pump and smog pump to get to it. the smog pump bracket holds it in place to keep the engine from turning itseld too far...quite a good design (pain to work on). Then you will need to put a jack under the oil pan and lift it up a bit(to support the weight). Loosen the bolts on both sides and it will come out. Good luck...it sounds like we are going to be doing the same thing this weekend
