Which side of a flexplate faces the block and which side faces the tranny? This is in a Chevy 350 if it makes any difference.

There are nubs on the flexplate that the torque converter bolts to. The nubs can either provide a recessed area for the bolt heads to increase clearancebetween the bolt and the block, or they can provide a recessed area for the nubs on the torque converter to sit in.

There are no marking on my flex plate and it replaced a special AA flexplate which might be different anyway.

Currently I mounted the flexplate with the nubs pointing toward the Torque Converter provided a recessed area for the bolt heads. The starter teeth are approx 1/2" away from the flex plate. Does this sound correct?

That's the way they normally mount - bolt head in the recess. Most GM flexplates/flywheels won't mount backwards anyway because the holes for the crank are not symetricallyt spaced.

I wasted a new $1200 turbo350 trans by putting the flex plate on backwards....and it pushed the torque converter into the trans pump and fucked it all up (techly speaking <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> ) so the trans only lasted like 10,000 miles.

I thought it mounts so the converter is closest to the motor...

I "could" be wrong (don't tell my wife) as it's been 10 years and many brain cells ago <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0">
