is it possible to take a drivers side diff'd 44 and flip it so its on the passenger side?

i was thinking about options for my cj and i can get ahold of a couple waggy axles. how would it effect the way the gears and stuff turn?

thanks

Bad idea. You won't get the proper oil to the pinion bearing and you will have to cut off the housing yokes and flip them back over since they would be upside down. There is more to it than that.

Why not just cut down the long side and retube the short side?

well it would drive backwards, unless you stuck reverse cut gears in it, and I'm not sure that would work, and if it did, it would burn up from oil problems, probably not a good idea. but you could shorten one side and lengthen the other.

Wrong, it would drive backwards regardless of any magic gears you put in it. Look for an earlier Waggy if you need passenger side drop.

thanks for the info guys. i figured it wasnt a smart bet. im in a hunt for axles for the cj. I dont know what stock CJ width axles are, but i want to go wider at any rate. im looking for a set of 60's for it because were throwin the v8 in there. and knowing my dads driving style from when he used to race.

any suggestions?

You can't flip it. The oil passages inside would be useless, the breather would pour out oil, the knuckles will need to be swapped from side to side and the fill plug will be either lower or higher than the proper level.

Oiling won't be a problem with this idea because of one or more of the following: the motor will stall, the t-case will explode, a driveline will break, or the ring and pinion grenade. One of these will happen as soon as he lets the clutch out because the front and rear will be turning opposite directions. RC44 gears won't fix it because they are RC not RR. If you flip over the rear also and run a marine motor you could do it other than all the things the others posted.

Hey DP,
What about a D44 out of a Scout. It has a pasanger side drop like you want. There is one in a junk yard local to you. Seaford Salvage on Woodlin ferry road out of Laurel.
