My wife just got home from approx. 60 miles of around town driving, when were getting the bags out of the Grand Cherokee (94- 4.0) we heard the radiator start hissing, popped the hood and it was blowing steam from around the cap.

Its been colder then usual around here (20s) 2+ feet of snow today, dropping into the sigles and teens at night.

is this cold related or did my cap just take a dump, anyone ever have this happen?

also she came home 12 miles in 4 low because we live at the top of a grade and the plows aren't running thru very often.

Thanks

it may just be from flogging it in low range.
more moving parts are more load on the engine.
Is there snow packed into the grill or fins?
I jumped in and checked the temp right after it started hissing and it was in the normal range, I think 190ish, could it have cooled off that much in 3 mins?

nope

Well presure test it and see if it holds pressure. If not then replace the cap.

It may have cooled off that fast in the area of the sending unit it is had to say.
Ill probably just have to go get a new cap, I have no way to pressure test.

Thanks

well steam blowing out of it is a pretty good pressure test.

it failed

the pressure should be blown into the overflow bottle not out the cap

This may sound to simple, but have you checked your antifreeze condition this year?? Sometimes -40*and +10* looks the same in the radiator. We get that alot up here, radiator freezes, no flow, block boils.
My wife just added coolant a few days ago. not sure what it looked like before that.

Man, get somewhere and have it tested right away. I don't think it gets cold enough where you live to break anything from freezing, but if the coolant slushes up, it wont flow and then the engine boils. That ='s BAD news.

When she put the cap back on, she didn't push down and turn that extra half turn..

Thanks for the help

Whats real bad is, shes the one that took 4years of auto and metal in high school, and is a certified welder. She can pull an axle apart, fix it, change gears what ever, and put it back together like nobodys buisness.

But..................................Can't put the radiator cap back on correctly :D

later
