Ross,
interesting...I've been thinking about a 2.9 v6 out of a ford ranger, very similiar to the 4.0. The ford v6 is very narrow and short in external dimensions but it sure makes my ranger pretty punchy and still gets good mileage. I don't like the chevy swaps as they are too wide, too long, and too heavy (in my opinion) for a yota. Remember the heavier the rig, the more axles break.

I think that yer onto something. I haven't had time or money to try it, but it would have to be a stickshift causse automatics suck.

That would be a goo swap!!! I would prefer the 4.0 over the 2.9 though. I have replaced many 2.9 heads because they crack.

I always liked the low end pull of the Ford 4.0's, and I too think it would be a good swap

I don't know - does it share bellhousing patterns with the 5.0? If so, that would mean adapters are available for sliding one into a Toy

Anyone thought about the new VW "W-8" engine? It is an eight cylinder that is shorter then my 4.3 V6. Makes lots of power and torque, too...I read that it is available in a couple of models....Don't know how much trouble it would be to mate to a Toy....Someone out there will dream up a way to do it......

exploder??? because they are POS....er make that a disposable piece of Ford!!!! The also like to catch on fire from under the dashboard and burn to the ground.

I can't get any parts for my ranger from the dealer because it's 10 years old, but is in excellent condition. Yes, I've beeen to several ford dealers and they think their s**t is worth even more than toyota dealers, if they can even get the part! Ford won't even step up to the plate and take care of their customers like toyota does. Mine is one of the fords with the eecIV ignitiion module that dies whenever it feels like it, the lawsuit against ford has been going for years, yet ford won't do anything about it and even denies that there's a problem. Toyota voluntarily took care of all their 3.0 v6 headgasket problems, even if you're not the original owner! Several of my friends have the 3.0yota and were well taken care of by toyota. Also, my ranger a/t trans took a major s**t at only 65,000 miles and we had to fight with ford to get it fixed...waiting for it to go again, as the replacement parts are (and still are) the same as the original defective design!

Just my $0.02!!! Only good part of the truck is the motor (have to upgrade to World Products heads) and the frame (7.5" rear axle, just missed the 8.8" which are pretty good).

No offense Chad and Zags...whew I feel better now. Hehehhehee

thanks guys. i was looking under the hood of one yesterday and they looked smaller then the 4.3 chevy so i was curious what you all thought. so, no one has done it. my problem with doing it was i was going to use the entire drivetrain. but like all fords it is a driverside front axle. i wonder id there are adapters to mount it to a toy?

are the 4.0 reliable? anyone have expeirience with them?

thanks

The 3.8 shares bolt patterns with the V8s As far as decent trannies bhind the 2.9 or the 4.0 the only thing is a c4 using a bell housing off early rangers with a c5. Only manual adapter is for a T5. I talked with Advance yesterday about making an adapter to put a NP435 on that motor they said they could design and do a short run if they had atleast 5 confirmed buys. sayed it would be $3-400. Then put what ever t case on the back of that.

sweet man!

i just need my motor to blow next summer and i would be all over it!

i only have 137,500 on the clock so far! its an 85' too. but i need some power too! it would be awesome on the highway. and with the stock gears it wouldn't be too bad. and then when i have enough cash for some 4.88 or 5.29's it would kick but.

are the 4.0's pretty reliable?

My parents have an aerostar with the 4.0 and have 280K on it. The only motor work have been minor things like plugs wires maybe water pump and alternator. I have a 2.9 in my ranger which is just about the same motor and I have 210K on it. The main problem is the transmissions. That is why I am trying to figure out how to put the np435 in. Send me an email and I will put ou incontact about the adapter. I need atleast 5 people to make this posssible. [email protected]

I'd go $500 in a heartbeat. Funny I have
been thinking about a 4.0 for a year. Can't
find any adapters either, It would be sweet.

It seems that there are more of us that have been thinking about this swap than we all thought. I have looked for adapters also for doing it.

Having worked on 4.0L Fords since they came out, I thought I'd share my $.02. They are pretty dependable motors, but not as dependable as a 22r. they are WAY under powered. You probably wouldn't notice enough of a difference to make it worth your while. You are really limitd to your choice of trannies. the E4LD auto trans is marginal for heavy wheeling. If you want a really good Ford V6, I'd go with the 3.8L or better yet, the new 4.2L (bigger version of the 3.8L) They share the trans bolt pattern with the 302. That gives you alot more options for trannies and adapters.
Me, I'll throw a cam and header on my toyota motor and run it another 300k.

4.0 way underpowered???? Yeah right.
Just make sure it's with a m/t as ats suck too much power especially from small engines.

If you want v8 power, then you have to start with a v8!!!

Go with the 2.9 or 4.0, mill off the front of your yota bellhousing and weld on a 1" thich plate with all the proper holes and input shaft depth etc. Anything can be done with a mill!!!

One problem that you may run into with trying to use the 3.8 is the height of the block from what I understand it is a v8 with 2 cylenders cut off. I know that is where people run into problems putting them into rangers. I have bben checking into the adapter more lately and looks doubtfull it will happen unless there is a longer out put shaft for the np435. The way I was looking at doing it the shaft won't be long enough to put an adapter behind the stock bellhousing. As far as using a mill anything is possible but i don't have one so I can't go that route.

I would just run a 4.0 with the T5 behind it. I have run T5's in my mustangs and have throughly abused them. If they are put together with the right parts, you won't have any problems. I was pushing 470hp from a supercharged stang and the trans held fine. Of course I wasn't dragracing or doing hole shots all the time either.

I'm still considering this swap. I don't like the 3.8s because of all the headgasket failures I have fixed on them. But then again, every motor has a fault somewhere.

What t case can't you put behind the T5 do they make an adapter to toy cases or? I know they have them to ranger tcases which suck but that is all I know of.

yep the 3.8 head gaskets suck!

I believe that you are also correct about the block sizing. The 2.9 and 4.0 area more compact and put out plenty of horsepower for a yota...unless yer doing serious mud runnin.
