I have found a guy with a ford 60 that he says has chevy outers. Is this a common swap. The way I figuer is if this is true it would just make it easier to put 35 spline outers on it.

high pinion is nice. I think 15 inch rims fit a little easier on the chevy brakes too. Uses slightly cheaper and more comon spindles if you are braking stubs, and any spicer dealer can get you a 35 spline stub if you need one in a hurry.

That is why I would do it just for the off the shelf 35 spline stubs. I wonder if he redrilled the knuckles to 6 bolt for the spindles or used chevy knuckles.

The advantage is that on a ford 60 front you need to use chevy or doge outer knuckles, hub, etc to run the 35 spline stub axle. The ford stub shaft is shorter than the 35 spline stub shaft. The 35 spline stub is 12 inches long. The stock OEM ford outer shaft is 11 13/64 inches in length.Or you can do soem custom machine work and make it work with custom stubs and hubs.Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the replys guys but now I have another ?. I read this in the POR bible1 5/16"x19 spline outer stubs
I thought all open knuckle 60's had either a 30 or 35 spline outers. Is this something I should really worry about or is it a easy fix. I'm driving 2.5 hrs this weekend to get this axle.

The ford 60 front came into in the following version. The early style was a closed knnuckle front end with axles no larger than a dana 44. The inner axle is 30 spline with outer diameter of 1.30.The stub shaft on this axle is 1 1/4 outer diamter with a 19 spline. This axle is not desirable at all. This style 60 typically has drum brakes. However, a few of the early style 60 open knuckle front's had the same crappy small axles in the model years of 76 and 77.The60 with the big 35 spline axles was used in 78-79..Just make sure to pull an axle and measure. The newer style which has 35 spline inner axles will have an outer axle shaft the is 1 5/16, 30 spline, 11 13 /64 from center of ujoint to end of splines. Good luck.P.S. if the vehicle has chevy outers on it then the stub shaft will be 30 spline ;but, 12 inches long.

Misconceptions regarding part's/brake fitment
for D-60 front parts.

Ford dual-piston calipers only require slight
grinding/modifications to fit a 3.5" BS 15"
rim. The chevy caliper will require alot more
grinding (like 1 hour each side).

You can run Ford knuckles, Ford brake caliper
and caliper mount, and Chevy spindle/hub.
The Chevy spindle will require drilling the
mounting to 5 bolt (ford style). Then use
D-70 outer stubs (35 spline).

Or, go full-cheap route. Just run all Ford
D-60 parts, except buy 35 spline outers,
and cut 1/2" off the end, then re-cut a new
groove for the retaining clip.

My front is a true bastard itself. D-60hp,
Ford calipers running Chevy rotors (1.5" thick) chevy spindles, ford caliper mount,
Chevy hubs, 35 spline shafts.

Side note: the ford rotors are only about
1.25" max thick. the chevies are 1.5" thick
and will require running a slightly-used
brake pad in the front. (no problem for me
since I already have used brake parts at home.

OK so if I understand right. If this is a HP open knuckle 60 w/chevy outers. I should have 35 spline inner axles and 30 spline outers 12" (easy upgrade to 35 spline) chevy rotors (1.5") who knows what caliper. I this about right. I shouldn't have to worry about the 19 spline stuff. That line that I copied out of the the POR bible was for chevy 60, '77-'87 outer stub shaft 19 spline, is the bible mistaken on this one?

chevy 60 front outer axle from 1977-1987(through 1991 for the crewcab) has 30 splines and is 1 5/16.Dana 44 is 19 spline.(this is straight out of the spicer catalog)P.S. the low buck approach mentioned in an earlier post on how to run 35 spline outers with ford knuckles,etc..will work as well.I have seen it done both ways. Good luck

Dug this thread up cause I just wanna make sure on one thing.
If I get the 35 spline 70 stubs and cut a 1/2 inch off to work with
my ford stuff . What lockouts do I run? Do I run the Chevy 35
spline lockouts? Will the chevys work on the ford hubs???

I'm doing this same thing with my Ford HP60 front for my YJ. The reason is that I needed the driver's drop diff and wanted HP. The ford knuckles apparently are weaker and I also wanted to run 35 spline stubs. I am using the Ford housing, Chevy knuckles, spindles, hubs, and custom brake mounts. John at WMS has broken several Ford knuckles, they crack around the top kingpin. I haven't heard this with the Chevy version, and they are noticeably thicker around the upper kingpin.

Ron, yes if you shorten the chevy 35 spline stub, it will work.
you will have to run the chevy 35-spline application lockouts.
yes they will work just fine.

and the craq I posted earlier in this post is NOT what I am
going to do anymore........

Hey Sherpa....

Would you happen to have a Chevy front D60 wheel stud that I could borrow? I need to measure it to see if it will fit in my rear HD60 hubs. No parts stores carry them and they are a special order item for a box of 10.
