Hi all first post on here, and new to 4x4s as well, however I have experience with mechanic work and fab work as well. So I’ll start off by saying I got my first truck which is a 95 Ford F-150 xl with the 4.9 l6, and I’d really like to beef it up and plan on eventually building it into and ultra four class (but that’s gonna be a long time from now😂). Anyways as I was doing my measurements I noticed that the rear shocks are mounted at a decent angle and figured I might be able to use the oem shock mount post on axle, but I don’t really have a lot of experience on this yet so I’m curious if I should keep it and maybe beef it up or cut off the oem mount and make new ones?

Do a lot of reading and searching on this site. After you have some background ask specific questions and you should probably stick to the newbie form for now.

Factory shock mounts are not designed to carry the sprung mass of a vehicle just the un-sprung mass and that is the OEM un-sprung mass i.e. OEM wheels, tires, and spring rebound load. You can beef up the OEM mounts or I would just cut the mounts off and install new ones for the coilover conversion. Additionally a lot (not all by any means) have the coilover mounts centered over the top of the axle tube not offset like a shock mount. All food for though, use it as you wish.

No more or less added stress than a cantilevered bracket, look at were a leaf spring is mounted, square over the axle tube. When the load is applied to the center of the axle tube you eliminate the moment that an offset bracket would apply. I used Artec axle brackets on my Jeep which are 1/4" thick.

1/4 " would be fine, you can get cheap brackets or make them. I prefer to make my own parts whenever i can so long as i have material and time on my hands.
