What's your opinion/knowledge (there's a big difference) of the Ford/ Sterling Axles?

I know the F 250/350's run 10.5" 35 spline full floaters, sounds like a D70 or 14 bolt competitor to me...

Also, Peterson's 4 Wheel and OR said the late model F150s run 9.25" with 34 spline shafts.

You can get both with disc brakes...

What about lockers/gears????

There are a lot of them around (a lot of Fords in the junkyard...)

I'm starting to wonder about these axles myself. There's not much in the way of lockers for them . . . yet. I'm sure there will be soon as the Superduties are becoming so popular. People say there isn't much for them in gearing, either. I've heard people say that 4.56 is the owest you can go. But Petersen's recently said they found them as low as 7.17, so I don't know. I do know that if I ever snap my 14 bolt, which is unlikely, this is what I am going to.

I *think* 7.17s are avail, but believe there are few ratios between 4.56 and 7.17. Id stick to a 14 bolt...cheap, plentiful, strong

The 10.25" and 10.50" Sterlings are brutaly strong. BUt ther arent as many options as for the D70, and Corp 14, both in terms of gearing and lockers. Detroit and ARB are available for the 10.25, as are 4.56 gears, Im not sure what is available for the 10.50 yet.
As much as I like the strength of a Sterling, the Corp 14 is just as strong, and possibly even stronger at the pinion, due to the additional support bearings at the pinion shaft. There are also a lot more options for the 14, and D70.

I believe all late model F150's came with 8.8's front and rear. The 4x4 Expedition however has a 9.25 rear and 8.8 front. The F150 7700 series had different axles, it took the place of the light duty F250. Don't know what they are but they do have 7 or 8 lugs.
