Well, I found a nearby salvage yard with a '98 Suburban with about 60K miles on it. I haven't gotten a quote from them yet, but they're supposedly gonna call me back today...

Anyhow, I was just wondering what a reasonable price would be for this engine... I was thinking somewhere in the $750 to $1300 range)

The engine will be swapped into an '87 YJ. (Yes--I already have Waggy 44s F&R so please don't start in on that...)

I was also wondering if anyone knows what tranny this vehicle came with (I was thinking either 700R4 or 4L60e) and whether I should snap that up too... My biggest concern there was the length and compatibility with my NP231 (I know, I know--BUY AN ATLAS--well, I don't wanna spend that kinda ca$h and I don't need the ultra low gears because there are very few rocks to crawl on in my area to begin with, so don't start in on that either The NP231 stays and let that be the end of it!) If the transmission that comes with the vehicle turns out to be unsuitable for my purposes, I'll probably end up with an NV4500.

Oh, and the Jeep is used mainly for mud bogging, hillclimbing, and trail-riding--but I also like to drive it to work (country roads--no freeway), in the winter (we get tons o' snow up here), and just for the hell of it, so I refuse to build a trailer queen.

Thanks a ton,

Jake Harsha

Hey Jake, what salvage yard 4L60e tranny, I am assuming a 1/2 ton though.
BS on there being no rocks in MN, you just have to look a bit harder.
I know you don't want to hear it but, if you have to adapt a 231, you are probably better off getting something else....Mebby if you get the Tranny and T-case it would work out, the output is on the correct side. Could be too long, though.

Whoa! All that for a 4-yr old engine with 60k on it! I hope that's just another one of those "California" problems... A fella could almost get a decent crate motor for that...

Wouldn't you like to know What kinda T-case did they put in those beasts? I should think it would have been one of those computer-controlled push-button "all wheel drive" doohickies--much too complex for my tastes probably a bad Lo gear ratio if it had one at all...

Yeah, I guess there's probably lotsa rocks and stuff up on the 'range and in the arrowhead region... Maybe in SW MN too, I don't know--but I've never seen any in the north-central area where I live...

I already got money in the 231 (SYE) and It's been pretty good to me, so I figure I'll hang on to it until it craps. I can always get one of those funky flipped-over D300 jobs or (gasp!) an Atlas at some later date after I've had time to save up some more money...

Ever since I got my Oxen installed I just get spanked by the power gods when I try to go through the deep [email protected] More traction than power. I was hoping the Vortec would take care of that.

Thanks,

Jake Harsha

4L60E for half ton. i would grab the tranny while you are at it. depending on the motor mounts you run you can gain a good amount of driveshaft in the rear and you will have plenty room, and then you have overdrive if you care about that.

On that the off chance that it's a 2500, what tranny would it have?

Thanks,

4L80E is the other choice.
I would go look at my DD in the parking lot, but I don't feel like getting dirty @ work.
D300's are cheap around here, but you have to flip it....

Check out pics from SoDak a few weeks ago.
The white YJ, the CJ w/flames, The Scrambler, a blue CJ, and the red Bronco are all from MN. http://community.webshots.com/user/phil_yj

If your gonna keep the INJ get ALL of it! Engine Tranny Tcase Wiring harness Computer Sensors ETC. If your gonna carb it ( like I have ) you wont need the tranny wiring puter ETC. I have a 97 Vortec in my Blazer hooked to a TH350. But I have NOT got FI. I put on an Edelbrock intake and a Holley. ALSO if you toss the FI change the cam. (its a roller BTW)

The 2 choices are 4L60 and 80 All 1/2 and 3/4 tons have the 60 and I think the 80 was 1 ton only. 4x4 or 4x2 doesnt make a difference.

make sure you get everything!!! i am almost done wiring in my 99 vortec 350 and 4L80E with 15,xxx miles on it. i paid $1800 for motor, tranny, and most of the 1ton truck it came in. you really need to find out, but i believe the 98 like the 99 uses a advance evap fuel system that will require you to run a evap canister purge solinoid, and a fuel tank pressure sensor. shouldn't be that big of a deal if you get all the parts. my 99 also has a vat's system (vehicle anti- theft). it looks for something in the key for recognition for it to start. i didn't want to deal with these so i got a pcm for a 97 suburban which didn't run the vat's or the advance evap system. the vortec's also use 2 pre and 2 post cat o2 sensors. i don't plan on running cats so i spliced the signal wire between the two post o2's and bought a $40 post cat o2 simulator from caspers electronics. it was $40. i could have bought two and not spliced the signal wire between the two connectors but why spend the extra $$$. anyway i have had ALOT of help from "crash" on this board doing mine or i wouldn't have know about all of these systems. anyway i should recieve my new pcm this weeks so hopefully it'll be running this week.

Hey, Thanks for all the good information High5! I don't remember seeing much of crash... Does he hang out in the Chevy section or here on the Jeep board?

Thanks again,

Hmmm, so let's make sure I got this right... You had to go to South Dakota to find rocks...?

Those looked like some pretty nice rigs... Some of them looked familiar... I assume you guys are all from down in the metro area? I was too up until 3 months ago when I finally came to my senses and got the hell outta there... Too many people, not enough pavement. =)

I'm going to Rolling Stone this weekend, which is very much in MN.
Most of the Jeeps are from the Metro area, the Bronco is from north of Duluth
I went out to Mud and More a couple of weeks ago, and that just gets so damn boring....silly mud
