Hey bowties,

I have read that earlier chev front 44's had smaller axleshaft Ujoints. Fact or fiction? Front is from a 71 blazer

My 71 had the smaller 260 u-joints in it. I broke both of them at the the same time with a open front diff and bald 33's...30 year old small u-joints suck.

You can swap in the newer shafts if you want.

70 above 73 and up below. You can see how beefier the axles are. They were a little longer than than the old ones too. Is your 71 a disc brake axle? If it is the newer shafts will go right in. Mine was drum brakes. I had to swap the knuckles to get them to fit. I know your question was about u-joints but wanted to show this too. Its a good upgrade.

My brother's '70 K5 had drums with the smaller joints. '71 I would suspect has the smaller joints, could go either way. Its easy to see them and verify which joints they are.

!972 was a split year for the change over to the 297 joint and usually in the 3/4 ton. First design vs second design.

Thanks for the help guys, looks like mine as a 71 with discs would have the small ones. 44's with FTK's are about as rare as front 60's around here

Just what year had 1310's on the axleshafts:confused:

Every year. 5-260x and 5-297x are both rated as 1310 series u joints.

If your axle has disc brakes, you can be pretty sure that it has the bigger 297 joints

i believe that spicer has a neww beefy joint to replace the 297
It is Spicer PN 5-760x

Unless it is a '71 axle, in which case it will definitely have 260s and disc brakes.
