I need to swap front third members. I have a completle set up one that just needs to be put in. I have the Haynes and Chilton books and feel fairly confident that I can do this, but they seem to show more stuff than I need to do to just get the axle shafts out a bit to clear the third member off. I do not want to take appart stuff that I don't need to. Want to make it as quick as possible. I do just need to pull the shafts out a few inches, right? Any advise other than a big hammer and a punch for the cone washers?

Oh, and what gaskets/seals do I need to replace.

'81 stock front axle.

If I were you, I wouldn't half ass it. If you have a new thirdmember, wouldn't you like to put it on a new axle? Rebuilding a front axle isn't hard but it will be time consuming. Pay attention to what you pull off adn what it does. Cone washers will take a good beating to get off, but be patient as well as violent (oxymoron?) A rebuild kit for a Toyota axle will cost you about $120 shipped to your door. This comes with all the necessary seals, knuckle bearings etc. Pull that axle off your truck and give your new gears a new axle to be put onto. If you are taking off your third member you will have to take apart a good majority of the front axle so just go all the way.

I it were mine I would clean, reseal, change the Trunion bearings, take the Birfields apart and clean them, check them and pack them. You are going to be into that far. Might as well do it right.

All-Pro sells a complete kit that has everything you will need as far as gaskets, seals, shims, and bearings. Clean and pack your wheel bearings and service your locking hubs while you are at it.

There are other places you can get these kits but AP is just off the top of my head.:D

a landcruiser disc brake axle is eesentially the same as a hilux/minitruck axle, the bearings, and hubs and birfields are interchangeable the axles are different lengths

lock it, gear it, and put longfields in while you are there newbie :flipoff2:

keep a mind on what tools you used and bring all them to the track next time:flipoff2:
