As i look at this bare D70 FF housing i have, which i need shortened i was wondering how the spindles are put on at the factory?
There seems to be a weld just after spindle on the housing, but i can't quite figure out what it holds together. The reason i wonder is i would like to shorten it like you would a front housing, if it is constructed the way i think it is. And that is to cut that weld press off the spindle cut the tube and then press the spindle back onto the tube and weld it up. Just like a front 44 knuckle.

Is that how they are made? Does the housing sleave over an inner part of the spindle that is pressed on? Does the weld just hold it from coming apart?

Thanks

not exactly a butt weld.

More like a swaged fitting.

They heat up both ends, the tube and the
spindle, and press htem together forming
a one-peice tube.
I've done a cross-section cut on a full
float spindle/tube, and you can only
see one peice. There is some discoloration
in the area swaged together though..
