I went to look at an 82 CJ7 for sale today, the guy said that the PO had dropped in a D40....? Upon inspection (I didn't identify which axle was in the front, I am kind of new at this...) the axles stuck out a good 4-5 inches on the drivers side and only 2-3 inches on the passenger side. What would have caused this?

what would it take to fix it? Shortening the drivers side shaft?

cut off the mounts on the axles and put them in the right spot.

I say walk away from this one and keep looking. No telling what else they screwed up.

Here is the run down the guy got it as a trade for a truck he was trying to sell. It has 33" tires and a SUA with a mild lift. It seems to run fine with the inline six and has the D300 transfer case. A few of the quirky things is that it is missing the front passanger shock, has tube steps for sliders, and it has been tipped on its rear in Moab. It's an 82 and he is asking $1,000... But I was thinking of talking him down to right around $600.

you need to outboard the spring hangers to get the axle center
