FZJ80 Lift ???

Hey Guys

Going to be ordering the OME for the new rig soon and was wondering what everyone recommended for an FZJ80? I did a search and most of the posts with pictures, no longer had the pictures working. Seems J springs are an 1 longer and recommended when heavy mods are done. The rig will have an ARB in the front, full roof rack with gear, and a heavy rear bumper with spare and some sliders.

I was thinking J Springs all around with 33" MTR's. Anyone running this combo got any feedback?

Appears there is some debate between whether you can get away with just the correction bushings of if the plates are needed as well. Anyone running this combo care to chime in with advice, info or pics? I am trying to visualize the height, but i also want it to functional good as well.

Thanks

Like he said...Christo is real smart about the 80 series, and is a nice guy to deal with.
With a little lift and 33's, you'll go dang near anywhere. Add a locker or two, and it's real impressive what an 80 will do!

And a TLCA supporter;)
yea talk to ben or christo. they will set you straight.

Elmariachi on mud, and Gary Coberly both have extensive experience with the 80's, I got a used 2" kit from Gary for the wifes and it drives, corners, and rides better than with the stock stuff, did 285/75R16 Toyo Open Country at the same time........http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=48649

I've run two sets of Js on my 80s. On the 91, I ran Js with 1" spacers in the front and 35x12.50 BFG MTs, I ran the caster correction bushings. On the 94 I I just recently installed Js with the caster plates from Slee. They are easy to install but they are a bitch to grind down the control arms to clear the steering linkage. The steering in the 91 was a little fast and twitchy, it actually was really good until I rebuilt the knuckles. The steering in the 94 is really sluggish right now. Much slower and stiffer than stock. I'm going to add a 1" spacer up front and see what happens. OME bushings are 2 degrees, there are some available in Australia from companies like Big Balls Offroad with 3 degrees. I think those might work well with Js. I don't think Christo has ever stated what degree the caster plates are. He just says for a 4" lift. Oh and on the 94 I'm running 315 BFG ATs. 315 MTRs are on a national back order due to the war. I was told by several places to expect 6 months. The 285s would probably be OK. I will tell you this, I'd probably go with Js right away. Or at least the Js in the front and the heavies in the rear because as you build this rig and start to wheel it you will want a 35" or larger tire. The advantage of the 285s is you don't need gears right away. I'm looking at 4.88s with the 315s. It is very sluggish without them. You might also check the Mud 80s forum, do a search. Most of this has been already hashed out there. And if you want 80 info that is definitely the hot spot.

'MUD's 80 section has craaploads of info about this and I gotta echo what Eric said there too.

I'm running J's and 1" spacers up front on the '93 with only the C/C bushings and it's not bad, but, our '97 450 with my old 851's(?) and factory bushings is squirrely as hell. I plan on swaapping the arms around and going with Slee's plates on my '93. Either that or making something myself.

Do your self a favor and get the J's from the start. You WILL want 35's.

Good luck and don't forget the before and after pics and measurements.
Thanks Guys

I spoke with Christo at length last week and told him what i wanted to accomplish (33" MTR's, light-medium wheeling, mostly camping, baja and snowboarding trips. And he recommended the 850/863 HD combo so that is what i went with. Got the Steering Stabalizer, the CC kit and the shocks as well. Should be here tuesday!

Thanks for the input

Looks nice! Are those tires a hair smaller then 33?

Thanks
At least 80 series lifts are fairly cheap, so when you decide to go big you will not have lost much $.

You will find that pressing in the the control arm bushings are a real bitch. I stalled a 12 ton hydo press when I was trying to get mine out.

http://www.toyo.com/tires/tire_specsheet.cfm?id=17 calls the 285/75/16 a 33x11.5x16 It is a good tire size for the lift you have purchased. The Toyo MT is a really hot tire out here right now. Even more so than the MTR. Probably because they are available in 35s and 37s whereas the MTRs are on backorder. They looked pretty good to me but I decided that I do too much pavement pounding so I went with BFG 315 ATs.
Thanks for your input!

I am looking for a 33x12.5x16 equivilent. That should be about a: 305/70x16 right?

Yes! That is about right. I don't know why but the 285s seem more popular in the 80 world. Maybe because they will tuck in under a stock suspension?
I am pretty set no MTR's though, had them on my last 2 rigs and loved em!

EDIT: Hmm, just checked tirerack.com and they offer the MTR's in a 285/75/16. Very cool. I will look into this some more!

Thanks

Too Late! I just got finished installing the OME 850/863 HD lift. Install was a breeze, pics coming!
