either my gas gauge is screwed or my truck needs another tune up?

i fill up, its barely hits the full mark. after i drive 10 miles its down to 3/4 tank.
i have put 50 miles on my tank now. its down to 1/2? what the hell.

how do you fix it?

The gas guage in my 87 4Runner is uselessly non-functional

I have been driving for the last 2 months using the trip odometer to know when to fill up. I know I get 20 mpg pretty much everywhere I go, and I know I have a 17.2 gal. tank.

20 x 17.2 = 344 mile per tank.

I have tested it, and have gotten at least 330 miles, and had to put over 16.5 gallons in, so I know the math works out right.

I was gonna fix it when I got the 4Runner, but this system works just fine and I am in no hurry to do otherwise

yeah, i drive around 200 and i'm back on empty. fill it up with 9 gallons and i'm full again!

it just pisses my off because when i go to the mountians gas is way more expensive and i don't know if i'm going to run out!

i guess i'll just have to carry a spare gas can and drive it until its empty! and figure out how many miles until it dries up.

In my experience, it is damn near impossible to run my toy out of gas. I've tried (had a spare gas can). Drove 80 miles past the time when it bottomed out. I think they are just set to show empty really early.

I just put a new fuel sending unit on my truck. It would go from half a tank to E in about 1 mile, then come back up to 1/4 tank later then back down. Before changing it out, I ran below E for 2 days. When I put it all back together, I put 4 gallons of gas in it. The needle didn't go up but a bit. Of course, when I filled it it went above F, so I know it is working. They just seem to read empty early.

Do the miles trick. Unless you are really getting shitty mileage, assume you'll get 250 miles on a tank. A spare gas can is always a good idea. You can also just figure out your mileage when you fill 'er up!
