Did you put some resistance on the ring gear/pinion when you ran the pattern? That will help it show up better. Its pretty hard to see.

Yup, put a rag or towel in your hand and grip the ring while turning the pinion yoke with your other hand back and forth over the painted area. Do it with enough resistance that the ring is trying to pull the rag off your hand... that will make the pattern show up better.
IMO the second one is better but not ideal yet.
