If I swap to a 350 what sort of gearing are you guys running with 35s? If not that what would be the best way to run 4.11s and lower the gearing?

Sloan, I don't mean to be a pest but your questions don't really make any sense. The sort of gears we have in our rigs have absolutely nothing to do with whether or not you swap to a 350. What are you <IMG SRC="smilies/smokin.gif" border="0"> son?

To respond to what I think is your question, my FJ40 with 35" tires and a Vortec 350 has an NV4500, 3-speed TLC transfer case and 4.11 R&P gears. This combination provides a pretty good compromise for trail, street and freeway driving. The moderately low 1st gear (5.61)of the NV4500 and the above configuration results in a crawl ratio of 53:1. The low-end torque of the Vortec does pretty well on most trails with this drivetrain. It is really great on the freeway with 35" tires because the overdrive of the NV4500. I cruise at 60 mph and 1700 rpm. And yes, the older I get the slower I go. <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0">

I think you also asked how you can run 4.11s and also lower the gearing. The archives are full of possibilities for doing this, and they accurately describe the pros, cons, tradeoffs and costs. With enough money or a good machine shop you can do just about anything these days. For example, my current project(FJ45 LWB frame shortened to 106"WB ) has a drivetrain consisting of a 350 Vortec, SM465, NP203, NP205 and 35-spline Dana 60HD axles with 5.89 gears that produce a crawl ratio of 154:1. There are currently lots of potential drivetrain combinations ranging from stock gearing of about 30:1 to super crawler ratios in excess of 300:1. You need to decide what works best for you.

That's what I meant, what are the ways to lower the gearing with t-cases, trannies, etc., leaving the stock 4.11s and either the 2F or swapping to a 350. <IMG SRC="smilies/smokin.gif" border="0">

Im running a 350 with the 4-spd tranny and t-case with stock 4.1 gears in the axles and it isn't low enough for me. Currently going to 350/th350/dana20 with a low gear set.

I have to agree with the suggestions for a SM420 and a 3 speed t-case. That and 4.11 gears has gotten me everywhere I needed. When I added F&R lockers, things just got a little easier.

One big consideration is if you want to retain the toyota rear axle. I have thought about swapping in a D60 so I could get an Atlas. I can't justify the cost since my rear axle is plenty strong (no broken parts so far, knock on wood), and my gearing is low enough to get me everywhere I have wanted to go.

If you are not competing in ARCA type events, I question the actual NEED for anything lower than about a 75:1 crawl ratio. Just my opinion.

One guy in my club is running a built 327,SM420,3-speed case,Ranger underdrive,& 4:56 gears,& 35" tires. Works great for him.

I have a 465 with a TBI 350 and 35's and can go way faster than I should and it still crawls slow enough. Have the 4.11's still.
But, I would like a lower crawl ratio, just don't feel as though I NEED it.
I had a 420 but couldn't find the parts to fix it. I would have just gotten another, but I had several Cruisers with 465's so figured I would go with it to keep the parts swapping options better.
The 420 is about 2" shorter though if you are looking to keep the length down.

I am running the 2f ,sm420 and 3spd tcase. I havent seen the need yet to run anything lower but then again I am rolling on 33s. I got the 420 for nothing and the plate adapter was about $250. I bought the pilot bearing and throwout bearing sleeve from Wardens for about $60. I think the chevy clutch disk was about $35. There were no driveshaft mods needed. So, for $350 +the price of the 420,doing the work yourself,you can have a pretty low geared setup.
