Ordered some 5.29's for the Taco axle in the rear of my 85 4runner. WCD said they only had a bearing kit...they didn't have the pinion shims and said I can get them from the dealer. Anybody have suggestions on what shims I should get or know of anyplace that sells an assortment?

Try putting "Attn: GearMan" in the title too.

Don't you need carrier shims also since the 8.4" doesn't use screw-type adjusters?

FWIW, I think GearMan gets a lot of his parts from WCD, but he still may know of shims from another application that fit or have another source or something...?

I'm hoping I'll need this info soon too.

OK, got gearman in the title now

Shows what I know, I didn't realize the 8.4's didn't use the screw-type adjusters

I also posted over in TTORA but I couldn't find any references to 5.29 installs under search in the 1000's of posts over there

This pic might help a little then:

You ARE talking about a Taco axle (8.4") w/o the electric locker, right?

The "plate washers" by the carrier are the shims.

Hmm... looking a little more closely... bearing spacer... pinion shims... does that mean it uses a solid spacer???

BTW, I think GearMan might have gone to Farminton...

The electric locked fzj80's have the same set up for the sides. There are like 23 different thickness shims for the side bearings. I don't know about the pinion though. I got the mini kit and it included them. Yogi did an 8.4 at my place. I'm almost 100% sure they were from WCD. I do know they were Precision. They should be able sell what you need. All they need to do is measure the width.

Hey David, give your local Toyota dealership a call. The pinion depth (which is what the shims control) should be pretty close with the shims that are in there now. The only TRUE way to know exactly what you'll need it by running patterns on the gears. The best starting point is to use what in those 4.10 gears now. Jon Vargus or Robert (I think Jon did his) should be able to help you out and they are local. Otherwise, come up hear to the Dallas area and I'll get Russ to hook us up. You buy the beer and Margaritas.

I just got 5.29 gears for my Taco rear end. The shims are very hard to find. Call Brent at Trail Tough he was able to get them.

Looking at my T100 manual, the pinion uses a regular crush sleeve instead of a solid spacer (judging by the torque instructions and the fact that its a "non-reusable" part).

(and top for GearMan)
