OK..... who has any dealings with these things. How much room do they take? What do they cost... etc.

Are you talking about Auragen type generators?
Funny story about those.
A small R and D firm next to my office in a town in Maine that shall remain nameless is working on the next generation of that type of generator.(Just doing r&d for investors)
It is being designed to be cheaper than the auragen, allegedly because it will produce the power needed from the genarator directly, without having to have any expensive conversion hardware. Dont ask me how it works, something to do with sine waves and stuff.

Anyway, auragens are pricey, and from what I've seen bulky.
I'm waiting for these new ones to come out, and I can guarantee they will be cheaper, and if the units I've seen are an indicator, smaller.
Supposedly they are going to be marketed and intended for service vehicles, and ambulances, and stuff like that, and meant to produce high outputs at low engine speeds.

any alt can get you 120v 20 amp, alts by design produce AC thats what the diodes are there for if you would consider going though all the crap to add another

just go buy a york. youll be soo much happier, probably get more air and alot less crap. i mean think about it your asking about installing a second alt and all of those issues to run a compressor you got for free. i say sell that free compressor and get the damn york. you probably be money ahead too.

compressor in the garage.. York aint. Mounting second small alternator (small compared to a york) under the hood maybe easier than mounting york... cause I got AC! Notice the Maybe?

If your telling me the second Alt would work then Im not sure your dollar math would add up.
1. Bolt used heavy duty alternator to fender well and buy pully from my budy at Kilby? easier install than York.. least under the hood part easier.

2. Out of the alternator deal I see that I would end up with an on board welder too.

something to make me go hmmmmmmm
