I do it quite often....as long as you have a bushing under the trans/x-case you'll be fine. Bolt it up and fire it off....

anybody got pix??
Like this? http://www.bentup.com/Photos/xmember1.jpg

Its a 1/2"x5" plate w/ a mount in the middle for my friends 79. Bolts up to 1/2" mounts welded to the frame. Pretty damn solid and can easily hold the whole truck.
Here's mine

what do you need pix of? all the crossmembers I've ever seen, except Front Range Offroad, hard mount to the frame. There is no reason to not hard mount to the frame unless your hardmounted to the trasfer case.
I think my understanding of "hard-mounted" was a little off.

I wouldn't weld it to the frame, you may want to get it off without a Torch in the future.

I wouldn't do that, you'll be grinding it off to do a clutch change or tcase work. I know Marlin has his mounted with u-bolts around the frame, might be an option if your frame nuts are wasted. You can also run a 1/2" 13 tap through the captured nuts, then use 1/2 13 bolts and nuts on the accesible ones. This is what I did with mine.
With the 3" BL and the 2" drivetrain lift it looks like there woul be room to get the tcase out still.

you didn't like it??
Yes don't weld it. You will end up regreting it I'm sure.
If you weld the crossmember to the frame, how are you going to remove the tranny if it brakes. I know you have dual cases, so it will be too long to tilt the rear of the t-case up and the front down to remove. You would have to remove the eng to get the tranny and cases out. Just weld some heavy angle to the frame if you want to make a crossmember.
Go ahead and weld the thing in, but don't come whinning here when you find out how hard it is to pull the tranny & T-cases. Of course you could always cut the floor board out and pull it out that way, All of my old Chevy's were like that and it made it pretty easy to pull the tranny out of them.

I did it temp like when I dualed. It was a bitch to weld the underside and on the flats I burned through the frame. I did a DRM/FROR x-member.
