Apparently the lease of a coal mine on the mountain has run out and the city has agreed to cut more trails on it. Word is this addition of trails will have more miles than the current existing park. They were telling us that it is going to be very steep where they are cutting new trails.

I'm considering a trip to Harlan this July 4th. I have a 4 day weekend. I wouldn't get there til close to midnight Friday. I've never been, would be primitive camping. Wheel Sat, Sun, Monday, leave Tue morning. Likely be coming alone so I'd like to hook up with some folks with knowledge of the place who aren't afraid of difficult trails. I have an Ftoy, 2.28/4.7, 39" reds. Thanks for any and all suggestions/help.

If your wanting to primitive camp, you can either drag your trailer up from everts to coyote camp or unload and take all your stuff to black bear camp. Coyote camp may be a little loud with a few trails being right there, black bear camp is a little quieter with only one being there. You can also stay in town (I would suggest everts side) at north or south everts camp ground for little to nothing. Short drive (3 miles) to trail head. I personally have never stayed on the putney side, I went and look at the campground over there one time and it was SO far away from the good trails and FOOD (lol) that I keep my butt in evarts. Plus then I'm close to the trailer. Last year I pulled my trailer up to coyote campground to rescue one of the rigs in our group that broke on the rail bed exit to the right, which has gotten to be very bad.

So at these campgrounds you can't leave your tow rig/trailer? If not then where do you park them?

Yes you. An leave your truck and trailer at them, though they are in the trail. It would be a hard drive to get a truck and trailer up to black bear campground but coyete wouldn't be too bad, just remember they are on the trail so make sure to lock your stuff up

Then maybe I need to stay at a different campground then. I don't want to have to "wheel" the truck/trailer/rig to the camping spot. Are Sycamore, Beech Creek and Creekside the same as far as getting to them with truck/trailer?

Im not familiar with them. I would suggest staying at south or north evarts, south if you want to be closer to food and restaurants, north if you want to be closer to the trail head. You will need to call to reserve a campsite. From evarts you can easily hit 10 + trails right there and fill a morning, if not a whole day.

If you want to stay over on the putney side, here is the campground over there. Nice part about being over there is the trail head connects to the campground, bad part is your not close to anything including the majority of the trails. A long way back as well if you broke on railbed, pinball, lower rock garden, cream puff, ect.

Stay at Sycamore Campground or Creek Side Campground. On the Evarts side, when you come up Bailey Creek Rd. The office/ general store/ check in will be on your left. Keep going strait onto the gravel main trail and both campgrounds are just off the main trail on the right. Sycamore would be my first choice and will be the first campground you will come to. Creek side is a little further up the main trail. I can get you a picture of the map if it will help you.

Are these the 2 trails past the main entrance on the evarts side? Like headed up white tail trail? Ive never stayed there but always wondered. What happens if you get there in the middle of the night, like the OP was asking about?

EDIT- Here is a quick map I found but doesn't show creekside. Some how last year I made a wrong turn and ended up at copperhead camp, you could tell no one is ever over that way lol.

Took a pic of the map I have. I think that link is dated? or there is some misinformation.

Hook ups are going to be at the North and South Evarts RV park in town. That's also where the shower houses are. Just a mile or so of pavement from there to the trailhead. Just no booze cruising if you're staying in town. You can use the shower houses if you stay at the Sycamore campground, just have to drive down to them. Id recommend the South campground because the other seems to always be packed.

Putney has everything right there, hookups, shower house, even a welder on site. But....you cant ride to the store for gas and food (unless you are licensed for the road). They do sell ice and sometimes have a food vendor on site. The trail from Putney to the trail system is steep and narrow and can be intimidating for less experienced.
