I don't see how a set of long tubes could cause early cat failure, nor have I ever heard of this before.

Short trips and not driving long enough for not only engine to not fully warm but also the cat are the big deals. I think as long as you get it hot you are good, perhaps some are making shorter trips and blaming it on headers vs age and trip distances.
