Highly mobile welding cart

I'm looking for inspiration from you guys if you have any good ideas on what makes a highly mobile welding cart.

I'm in college 2 hours away from home, but have projects in both cities. Currently, the welder gets carried everywhere. Up stairs, down stairs, lifted into truck beds, driven all around the state...gets carried through grass, gravel, sits near cars, sits under trucks...you name it. My Miller 211 w/autoset goes where I go and I keep having to connect and disconnect the gas bottle. Each time I waste gas that's in the line.

Any designs you guys are proud of and wouldn't mind sharing? I'm thinking bicycle tires on the cart would help tackle the stairs easier.

That makes me think of this:

I'd get a good hand truck/dolly with large "all terrain" tires and mod it to fit your welder and tank leave the tank standing along the upright. That way you don't have to keep disconnecting the tank.

It won't hurt to have inert compressed gas cylinders laying down. Acetylene, however, is dissolved in acetone and they must be upright, also if they have been laying down they must be let stand back in the verticle before use.

I use a few wagons like that to haul my Miller XMT-304 welders with the Miller S-22A feeders around for the gas cylinders I use a cheapie tank hand truck .

When the bottle goes empty I can wheel it back to the cylinder storage area swap it out and be good to go.

This set up really wouldn`t work for going up and down stairs.

Please post vids of any of those 4 wheel carts going up a set of stairs:laughing:
$100 Northern:

The Hobart in my shop is on one of those carts-I hate it. I have the plasma on a H-F $50 cart (less on sale or w/coupon) and I much prefer it. Controls more easily accessible, bigger/usable shelf below. Could use better casters, but for the price I won't complain.
I'll still stick with my original recommendation for what to do with the welder, but if you want a a way to carry a 250 bottle around all day for cheap here's whatcha do:

- Find a cheap hand truck, or better yet, just build a frame because that's all you'll be using
- Buy either a couple 8" pipe hangers from plumbing supply or commercially made bottle brackets from Airgas
- Go to junkyard and find a small FWD car or minivan
- unbolt/hack off rear hubs & spindles from above
- Buy two 13" spacesaver spares that fit lug pattern of above hubs
-Weld it all together

You are now the proud owner of a "roller bearing, pneumatic tire, 750 lb capacity, heavy duty cylinder truck" that will go over just about anything (and would cost almost a grand to buy from an industrial supply). Bicycle tires are for bicycles, not hand trucks.

My point is that if stairs are ever in the equation, a four wheel cart certainly isn't going to work in your favor. Of course you could just keep it simple and just go buy a smaller tank.

2 wheel dolly with wheels like these that you build. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200331764_200331764

Remove the factory bracket that holds the tank on the welder. Build the cart for as low a CG as possible, and mount the welder so that you have a couple of inches from it hitting when climbing stairs.
Separate 2 wheel cheapo dolly with 10 inch pneumatic wheels dedicated for the tank. Quick disconnects for the tank as previously mentioned.
Do you have a link or add for that welding cart? I browsed AG supply but I'm not sure if I found the right website. There were a bunch of AG supply named businesses.

The gas in the line is at low pressure, but I connect and disconnect the line many times per week when I have to lug the welder from the basement up to the job site. It adds up, especially filling at $87 per gas bottle.

Question - does the gas bottle HAVE to be upright when in use?
You are paying way too much.

Sounds like a 300cf

IIRC only fuel gases have to be standing up when in use. I know oxygen is fine on it side, Don't see why aregon or C02 would be nay different
I doubt he is lugging a 250 or 300 around without a cart. :laughing::laughing:

That is what you need to move those big bottles around. I have a 300 and a 250 that stay in the garage. I also nave a 40 that is used if in need to lug the machine offsite.
I got tired of dragging my cart around the yard to work on shit so I grabbed the moving dolly and some scrap pipe and shelf and built this in about an hour. Much better. Pretty sweet too because when you set it down it's not on any wheels and won't roll off. The hooks on the back hold the 50 ft extension cord as well.

I'm about to start making a cart to hold my TIG, MIG & plasma and wanted to see what others have done. I have some from other site, but I'm hesitant to post because I cannot give credit to the makers.
