I just found this link:
http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/on-boardwelder

I want to try and build on of these, but I would like to use a GM altinator. Will this work with a GM or do I need to get a ford altinator? A GM would be a lot easier to mount on my engine. Any help would be apreciated!!

You need an external voltage regulated alternator. I believe this can be done by modifing the alternator - by shorting the internal regulator - and installing an external regulator with associated wiring changes.

Check out this link

To weld with an alternater, the voltage regulator is being bypassed. With a GM alternator the voltage regulator is internal.

So you could have two alternators - one for the vehicle and one for welding. Or you can modify the GM alternator to be externally regulated and modify the wiring to have an external regulator. You will need a regulator for the vehicle.

I have not actually done this, It should be do able. This information is free and it may not be worth what you paid for it.
