So jeep started howling. Trying to figure out what it could be. Sounds almost as if it is coming from the transmission. It only does it when coasting. When in gear and accelerating no noise. When in gear and decelerating no noise. Out of gear and coasting howling noise that changes with speed. Clutch in or out sounds the same. Took the front drive shaft out and it made no difference. ax15 np231 d44 front and rear. Both yokes on the d44's are solid, no movement up or down/ side to side. If it was a bad pinion bearing would it sound like it is coming from the transmission area? What would be the best way to diagnose issue? Put on jack stands and "drive" it? Any advise on tracking this down would be appreciated.
