i admit my stupidity on this one!

i was talking to a friend and were wondering why we couldn't just take the rear third and throw it up front as a high pinion and the front in the back the same way. farmers up here do it to the tractors. i'm not sure if they are hellacut like truck r and p are. are the r&p weaker this way? thanks and go ahead and flame away.

can you make them high pinion by just getting reverse cut gears? or is there more to it then that?

should work great if your goal is to be able to drive 85mph BACKWARDS!!!! oh, and mister search god there wasn't anything about it! you try all i found was someone saying the reverse cut gears were on sale.

but what about putting the front in the back and the back in the front. then mounting them hy pinion?

the hy pinion is completely different housing and everything
as far as swaping diffs front to rear thats not an issue as they are the same fawking thing

dude you need to seriously venture away from this bosrd for a while, there is so much info out there
the reason they wont work is this, the ring gear is on a certain side, if you were to flip the 3rd, the ring gear in now on the other side and it wont even go back into the housing now.
whereas a hy pinion has the ring gear on the correct side, but the pinion is hy
like you.
go to allpros sight, they have a few pics and if you go to the net there is more info there too
there was a good article in 4wheel and off road about the ultamate build up too
is that better

youre kidding right? the third members are the same, theyre interchangeable, if you want hi pinion, i think you can use a thirmember outta one of the land cruiser. I dont remember which one though

No you cannot put reverse cut gears in and turn the diff over. There are hy-pinion drop ins for Toyotas, I think they came out of LC's but they do not work in the rear. Marlion has tried them and they break.

no there is pinion oiling issues with this also, I ddon't know of the top of my head what other problems there would be though....call Marlin and ask him , then report back.

Because reverse cut gears in the rear are weaker than standard cut and 7.8" ring gears are on the small side to start with.

the strength issue using them in the back is because you are using the coast side of the gear instead of the drive side, like you would with a standard 3rd.

when they are up front you use the drive side, instead of coast side like a standard front.
that is the reason they are stronger than a regular 3rd when used up front

The FJ-80 3rd members also have special oil slingers and passages to pump gear oil up to the pinion, since it is above the oil level. Without that oiling, the gears would not last very long.
