I bought a kit from a vender about a year ago
worked great,
all of a sudden it stopped working,
when you first start the truck it seems ok
about 30 feet and a turn later, you need 2 hands and a porta power
seems harder than manual steering

So, i changed the pump with the same results
Changed the box with the same results
only other thing is the ram ?
Could the ram be bypassing within itsself
therefore fighting itsself

is a 2nd generation toyota cylinder is 6"x1.5"
anyone been there before

I have the same problem. I am pretty sure that one of my hoses are kinked and when the fluid gets hot the kink gets worse. I just haven't gotten around to replacing it yet to make sure. I'll probably replace it this week. I'll let you know.

sounds like your steering box is bad (in the valve) the valve at the head of the box (in put from the steering wheel) is where the valve is

the way I always test basic (cylinders with out special valves or other specal crap) cylinders is to stroke the cylinder all the way one way (out,in,left, or right just all the way one way) take the hose off on the side you stroked it to ( if you stroke out you want to take the "IN" hose off) then just apply oil (pressure) to the out hose and if oil comes gushing out then you have a bypass

some times the nut that holds the piston on will back off and the oil will only bypass one way ( on retract the oil will pass between the rod and piston, and on extedn the pressure will push the piston against the rod and seal the bypass)

I have seen seals imbeded with metal from the pump and they seal when cold but not when hot you would be surprised as to how much metal floats arround in a hydraulic system I feel the best rout is to have both pressure and return filters as well as a magnet to try and catch any metal the pump puts out (cause ALL pumps will make metal, and add it to your system)

any way I will bet a donut that the valve in your steering box has crap sticknig in it

just got in from the garage
capped one side off and applied pressure to the cylinder
was bleeding fliud past the piston
tore apart the ram and
1 o ring was gone, a sliver here and there
was all that was left.
found a o ring and put it back together
will put back on the truck in the AM.
HOPEFULLY, It may have been damaged
during the original install, that way it will be fixed

By the way,, the vender that sold me this (well over a year ago)
got a hold of me and gave his assumptions
on the problem also, and offered more help if needed.
Needless to say that there is some " down to earth" venders
around here !

When a vendor on the board takes care of ya either through product, tech assistance, or price, post em up, let us know.

Lake rat offered to help me with my hydro assist problem if I have trouble with the vendor, and it isnt even his product. That to me means alot about the vendors on the board and the lengths they will go to to help us out.

thanks kwrangln, glad to help.

Fabricator, be careful to check all the other pieces and parts for trash. I've had pumps come apart and then everything else gets ruined even after replacing the pump from just trash floating around in the system.

I'll be glad to help in any way i can whether you bought the box from me or not

Exactly what kind of filter do you use on the high-pressure side?

I just want it on the record before somebody plumbs in a regular oil filter and blows the thing apart, cause I know that aint right. It's fine for the low pressure side, but not the high.

you don't put a filter on the high pressure side. only on the low side. if you are dead set on putting one on the high side go talk to a local hydraulic shop to see if they offer anything.

the pressure filter catches all the big stuff that the pump might spit out the return filter catches most of the small stuff and a magnet in the rez should catch every thing else
