The type of 3/4" 36 spline U-joint that has the splined ends split with pinch screws will fit over the 7/8" 36 spline shaft. I reccomend that you drill for a set screw or something hen doing this to assure things stay tight , and straight.
I will soon be having input shafts for hydraulic valves made for me that are 3/4" 36 spline input to solve this problem.
