OK, so I bought a 1980 4x4 longbed. I think it's going to be the new trail rig after major mods (I told my wife it's to haul junk for yard work and going to the dump <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0"> )

Anyway what should I look for / replace immediately / etc.?

Also the seats are trashed. Will seats from a 1984-88 work in this truck?

Make sure that the frame is still intact and strong in the rear especially around the front of the rear leaf springs. Seeing as how you live in Az you probably dont have to worry about rust the way we do out here on the east coast. Anyway happy trails.

BTW a buddy of mine and myself have a 80 SR5 parts truck if ya need anything like gauges etc. Mainly small parts now i.e. no drivetrain in truck.

How about seats? a hood or tailgate maybe?
Or a passenger side fender?

Oh yeah it came from Utah and is pretty rusty. I've been beating back the rust since I bought it a week ago.

It's not a daily driver or anything so I don't really care about apperance. The neighbors are thrilled... <IMG SRC="smilies/flipoff.gif" border="0"> them...

How about picking up some junkyard buckets out of a prelude or integra or something along those lines. Probably a lot more comfortable. check out the body under the front cab mounts. Mine have rotted out pretty bad.

eather get rid of the 4 speed or rebuild it
with good new parts 2nd gear gets hit hard
and makes for a weak link.
if you end up replacing the 2nd gear you have to buy the whole counter shaft, witch is about $250-300

Ditch the L-43 trans - they suck I knocked every tooth of 2nd in mine with my hybrid <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0"> Go with a later G,W, or R-series trans - 5th gear would be a nice extra too.

Look for a junkyard Hyundai for seats...Nice seats, and the cars never last long enough to wear 'em out!
