In bleeding my brakes today, I noticed that my front calipers make an awful creaking noise when they're applied. This doesn't seem normal, and I think it might be a contributor to my braking problems:

I replaced the master cylinder, bled the lines, have no leaks, and checked the brake booster -- yet I still have a pedal that's so soft, it's unsafe. It goes right to the floor under most conditions, but sometimes it's partially firm. If I pump the brakes, I get a little bit of braking power. If my Jeep is turned off, I can get the pedal rock-hard if I pump it enough. There's enough brake lining and the calipers are making full contact with the rotor... from what I can tell.

Anyway, I think that this creaking might pertain to my braking issues. I never noticed it before. What do you think?

How do u loose brakes? did they get misplaced or did they walk off all on their own?:flipoff2:

But seriously did u bench bleed the master before u put it in? that could be a prob with air in the master.

The brakes actually decided to run off -- last I heard, they were hiding underneath my pile of NP205 parts. They were jealous that I was devoting all of my time to rebuilding a transfer case, and not fixing them. Pesky things... :flipoff2:

I bench-bled the master cylinder as best I could. I'm going to try it again tomorrow, on the vehicle, and see if I can get any more air out. Does the air in the MC eventually work its way through the rest of the brake lines?

I had this problem before I replaced the master cylinder, though... REAL spongy pedal, but I could get some braking power if I pumped it enough. I thought the MC was the problem -- apparently not, I guess?

Creaking may come from bent guide pins. What kind of vehicle? I had a similar problem on my xj. Seems the calipers are interchangeable, but if you put them on the wrong side they won't bleed because the inlet is higher than the bleeder. Yeah, I'm a dumbass

I fixed the brakes. It turns out that the wheel hubs were shot, and the pad wasn't making full contact with the rotor.

I HONESTLY checked this before I replaced the master cylinder, and the hubs were fine. Maybe it was a combination of problems, I don't know.

My buddy's YJ suffered from the same exact problem one week ago. I swear, Jeeps talk to one another...
