Not all the newbies are the problem, just the ones who really don't belong here. The people who are into rockcrawling and other types of "extreme" (there's that word again) 4WD definitely should be here, because that is how the new ideas get around. But the pavement pounders and the riceboy wannabes should get the fawk out, cause their ideas and views are pretty much useless here, other than to be flamed relentlessly

That's my 0.02, and IFS still sucks.

SO you're saying that if I come up with a 4 wheel independent suspension using portal axles with 30"+ of wheel travel, it would suck on rocks?
I just think no matter what you think you can drive over and what you plan on using to drive, have an open mind rather than an open mouth......
If the current version if IFS isn't good enough for YOU, then rather than bashing it and jumping on the "it was invented 50 years ago and it is good enough" bandwagon, try to build something newer and better. Might catch someones eye and make you some $$$...

OH YEAH, never try to agree with everyone, it makes you look like and ASS....

So what you guys are saying is that in order to be hardcore and to hang on this board you must have a solid axle. Right?
Well I have IFS and rockcrawl a lot. I wheel with Jeeps and they accept me more than the Yota crowd. It should not be like that. They don't make fun of me or belittle my truck because it has IFS. I believe you can be hardcore with an IFS.

Perhaps we should start calling IFS rigs -more- hardcore than our solid axle ones. After all, they are more hardcore. They have to stomp on the gas and get super tipsy on three wheels over obstacles that their solid axle counterparts flex out over.

Let's see it first then we'll all suck your dick for being the IFS king! IFS sucks for Pirates and POR junkies. It's the Pirates of the Rubicon BBS, not Pirates of the desert 500 BBS. Remember that.

To stay on topic again: FAWK NEWBIES (and ya, your still a newbie if you've only been on the board a couple of months and your a Granite Guru!) Oh, and IFS still sucks, the only reason to buy a truck with it, is to cut it off! (For wheeling that is). And to contrary belief this is a "ROCK CRAWLING" site. If you want something else, go elsewhere!

If you wheel east of New Mexico, you cannot have a clue what real rock crawling is all about. (I can hear the replies already )
Just the statement that you rock crawl alot with an IFS proves that. It can be done, but the ifs parts wont last long. Geez, you guys read the Magazines, have you EVER even seen an IFS truck even entered in a rock crawling cometition? All of you have my personal invitation to come to Phoenix and see what rock crawling your IFS is all about. Or, better yet, spend a weekend with the Tin Benders at the hammers! I am sure they would love to show you around. For all purposes related to this BB,IFS SUCKS, PERIOD! If you don't agree, go away

I dont agree that all ifs sucks, just the ones people spend time and money improving. If you want a nice ride you arent wheelin. The only drawback to fame is popularity. Everyone is totally jazzed to point out when we get Magazine and media time but the drawback is newbie dumbasses that post stupid questions. If I have a stupid question,(How wide is your jeep tub? Mine is 60in.) then I go to info sites not a hardcore BB like this. I understand some tech stuff thats asked alot like "will 44044s fit my toyota mini?" but some people dont read every topic and the search has alot of info that takes alot of time to weed through. The next time you say go to search do it yourself and type in 44044 and tell me how long it takes to download whereas I post it and boom three responces-two say use search and one says what I want.

Yeah, I would say that it sucks because the IFS design causes you to LOSE (or at best not gain) ground clearance as the suspension compresses. Not my idea of a good rockcrawler. Don't matter how much wheel travel you got when your diff is firmly planted against the rock you need to get over.

Relax, man, we're just BS'n about this particular topic. No different than when my friends and I argue about tires, gearing, engines, etc. It's all part of the fun of this sport/hobby. It's good to get a lot of differing views, although this subject has been beat to death. So I guess this is just for fun then.

BTW, IFS STILL sucks.

Well, lets see here. I may be totally new at 4wheeling, and granted I probably don't know how to do my own solid axle swaps, weld, or how to install a locker.....but guess what? You guys were all newbies too, askin the same retarted questions that we ask. Doin the same stupid things that we do. Hell if ya ask me sometimes ifs can be more fun, even you guys gotta admit that it's fun to drive fast offroad. Ifs is pretty good at that. Anyho, I don't wanna really get much flak from you guys cuz you still give great advice and are more than willing to help on the trail, especially when newbies like me decide to go through a mudpit with street tires and end up getting my fool ass stuck. Anyway, If anyone has any sources for cheap toyota axles, and leafs, I know a guy who'll do a solid axle swap on my truck for only $150 bux or so. Help me out.

Good luck finding cheap Toy axles. Not only do the Toyota guys need 'em, but the Sammi guys are snatching them up, too! I can't find a birf locally to save my life, and prices of other things at wrecking yards here have gone sky-high over the past couple years.

1. Sand entire vehicle
2. Apply primer
3. Coat evenly in olive drab - rattle can style.

I got mine from some kid who rolled his truck down South here. SAS ain't all the rage here. Yet. Paid $150 for mine.

Seriously, though, I think IFS isn't as bad as we make it out to be... Throw a locker in the bakc and a winch on the front, and you can wheel an IFS Toyota very well for a stock vehicle. By the time you know what "SAS" stands for, you're no longer fire-roading and mud-holing. You've reached the point where you either have to build it into a pre-runner and stick to the sand (screw that).. or you've got to cut that joker off and go hit the rocks.

That's where I'm at (IFS right now. That $150 axle gets hung before the end of Novemeber - little promise I made to me.

TO ALL YOU GUYS WHO SAY 30" TRAVEL IFS CAN CRAWL ROCKS: I watched one try this weekend. So shut up and go home. We were running Turkey Bay OHV in Kentucky. Lots of STEEP[/b] (as much as 70* in places) loose-shale-over-limestone.) He had a prerunner Chevy out there. Mega-travel rear axle, tricked out IFS front (Like FISHY'S post). It was a tire-lifting bonanza. I watched a spring-under jeep (stock) with a 4" lift & two lockers crawl the hill he almost rolled on. Right at the top there was a 1 foot high ledge with a dip on the right side in front of it. He almost went over and spun like a big dog... The jeep went up cause his rig kept all 4 on the ground.

You simply CANNOT GET AROUND THE FACT THAT IFS DOESN'T DROOP!!! A rig with 14" of travel on IFS has 2-3" droop and 11-12" compression... and the tire on the ground ain't twisting the one in the air back down - THAT'S WHY YOU LIFT TIRES. Theres no droop and no leverage.

Yota is right. I have that long travel kit and have 14" of travel with IFS, BUT like he said I have about 4" of droop. The other 10" is uptravel.

I think you should be saying:

IFS sucks for Rocks. Always has and always will

I enjoy looking at this board because I think that its cool to see some of the crazy stuff you guys go up and over. Even though I could never go on a trail ride with you guys its fun to watch

If anyone is ever in Southern CA and wants to see what its like to ride in a IFS prerunner just let me know and we will go for a ride Not over any rocks but hauling ass through the desert going over whoops at 60+MPH!

IFS SUCKS, for rocks.
