Ok...I have three solid axle rigs (had 4 in January but sold one) and two IFS Runners. They all get wheeled and yes solid axle is better cause it works better and is easier/safer to wheel in. The IFS can be fun though as you have to take crazy flat lines and weave in and around obstacles that you don't think about with solid axles. Also its cool to get pics with four, five and six feet of air under a tire sometimes two at a time! The more important thing that gets your rig down a tough trail will always be the locker in back (or front or both). A locker equiped IFS truck can actually go more places than most solid axle trucks with open axles. I have ARB'S in my solid axle truck so I know what can and can't be done quite well with and without the axle locked. Also, I believe that soft uptravel makes rockcrawling easier than downtravel. Twice now I have wheeled with incorrect length shocks (cause I damaged the correct ones the weekend before)--once with too long shocks and once with too short shocks. My truck did better with the too short shocks which limited droop! I theorize that this is because the two long shocks would bottom out and prevent more compression thus lifting the rig and causing a loss of traction at the other tire (which could droop like normal as the shocks a plenty long). When you have short shocks the tire can go up and the whole rig does not have to lift up--also loading on both wheels of an axle is closer to 50/50 which helps maintain traction. I know this because I often wheel without the ARB engaged or sometimes it won't (like when the seals go out etc.). Anyway, my opinion and
observations.

glad to here it. but you do relize you are the execption to the rule. of course there are a few of you ifs guys that get it. pazuzu, art, drew and a few others. but the simple fact is that the non get it ifs owners out number you and if i let them post simple ifs questions on this board we would lose the hard core edge and become a "street pounder how to" web site. and i am not about to let that happen. so i will say it again :

Why...? because I'm right? Go ahead Camo, ban me if you feel the need and then you might as well delete this (your) thread because that will prove YOU can dish it out, (as you do more than most), but you can't take it. So what's your answer to that....yea, just ban someone because you have the POWER to do so. One minute you say no IFS posts (which I haven't) but on the other hand you say no IFS posts unless your rig is an awsome looking Pre-Runner. So there are exceptions?....whatever...Have a nice day

Yes I understand where your coming from but the sad fact is that sooner or later all the solid axles will dry up toyota only made so many although they made a bunch but its been almost 17 years since the last ones were avalable in the US and they are getting harder to find and more expensive when you do find them. so we will be seeing more and more ifs on the trails and like I said before if I would of known then what I know now I would of bought a solid axle toyota instead but for now I'm having fun with what I got shure a solid axle is on the wish list but I will run what I got until then.

Yes, but wagoneers are not getting harder and harder to find, they are ugly and nobody wants them. They just happen to have an axle that fits well under a Toyota. There are plenty of Dana axles to go around! I found it was easier to find a Dana 44 axle for free than a complete Toyota one to pay for....

Look at the Ford 9" and high pinion Dana 60.
They are being reproduced aftermarket because the the demand was still there after the supply of O.E. dried up. I don't see why the Toy axle will be any different. there are already aftermarket birfs being built.

And yes, IFS SUCKS!

I wheeled a built IFS rig for four years before I gave it up. All it did was teach me how to fix shit on the trail, and how to look for the easiest line. This is a hardcore site. IFS is not hardcore. Why is that hard to understand?? You can defend it till you are blue in the face, but it still won't be hardcore. Yeah, you can wheel it. But it will never flex as well, never wheel as well, and it will always break before straight axle junk, so why bother? Course, this argument can be taken to the next level as well. I have now given up on toyota axles, too. Not hardcore enough. Going to 60's. My tube buggy to make its debut this spring, with nothing toyota but a frame and xfer cases. I guess it all comes down to your level of loopyness. Everyone should up their level of loopyness. Cut off your IFS!!

Its a good thing that this is a rock crawling site because if it wasent you would be as wrong as you can get. IFS is not hardcore for rocks and since this site is all about rocks, you got it! Anytime you think that IFS sucks for everything though just let me know and come on down to the desert and lets go for a little ride :)

So let me get this straight. What you're saying is, if I was saying something that I wasn't, I would be wrong. But since I didn't, I'm not? But what I did say is right, so I am? And you posted this because. . . . ??? IFS is great for the desert, but 90% of the time that it is mentioned on this site, it has to do with a rock crawling application. I'm pretty certain that was understood by everyone else that read this post, but I'll be happy to clarify. "For the purpose of rock crawling, IFS SUCKS."

I think you are right Camo....didn't we have this discussion months back on the TTORA board.

Anyway............IFS + Rockcrawling = :flipoff2: :rainbow:

It doesn't work.....been there done that with my OLD TACOMA......note I said OLD. Sold it and got smart....Bought an 88 4Runner, torched the front and rear suspension off and slapped a Dana44/Dana60 in it + all the other goodies.

Then decided I wanted a new toy so I picked up 94 YJ and will be swapping out the Dana30/35 for some D60's when I get back to the good ol' US of A.

IFS Sucks, unless you role with Ivan Stewart as you said in Post #1! :flipoff2:  :flipoff2:
