Recent wheelin trip

Took the Scout out wheelin again. I installed the new fan shroud in hopes it would help keep the engine cool. But no luck...:( so well do some low cost tweaks to so if it cures it. If not then off to purchase a bigger radiator.

Pics of some flex. If was tough going. Had to do some fancy winching to pull us out of some narly slopes and ditches. But it was worth it.

Been busy with life, but the recent weekend update made me think about posting up what little Ive done since my last post.

So here it is.

In an attempt to track down my over heating problem I ran several tests and came to the conclusion using a pressure test on the radiator cap that I had a blown head gasket. So a complete engine compartment tear down was in order.

Got the heads looked at and surfaced. The shop said they weren't warped or cracked.



Then came the pain staking process of piecing it all back together 2 hours a day when the kid was napping. Its amazing how much work doesnt get finished in 2 hours... :shaking:

Installed a new PS cooler. Not that my steering fluid was getting hot but it took the fin and tube style cooler out of the front of the radiator. Just in case that was working against the heating issue.





So now I have about half of my radiator being directly in front of free air flow. Next step is to start it up and pray... :evil::evil:

Have you had a PBR go flat yet? Just wondering as you are carrying a spare.

I dont know. I havnt wheeled it enough to need it! :shaking::shaking: When I purchased the tires on Pirate, the guy was selling 5 for the price of 4. I couldn't pass it up.

I bought one on these last year

It allows you to add pressure to each cylinder. So if I add 90 psi to a cylinder and bubbles show up in the radiator, then I know I have issues.

I removed everything from in front of my radiator and that helped.

IHPartsAmerica sell RMI-25. sounds like snake oil, but the stuff works.

Yea I looked at options similar to that. I have a lot of diagnostic tools available to me through work. But the 40 min drive hinders me a little on my weekends when I could go rent it from a local store. I ended up using a pressure tester for the radiator and revved up the engine while it was connected. Every time I gave it throttle the needle bounced up with the added pressure. So somewhere I had a leaky head gasket.

On another note. While attaching my TV Cable to my tranny, I fucking stripped out the bolt threads on the transmission housing :mad3::mad3: I was soo pissed. Shit went flying in my garage. :eek:

Now I have to fawking drop my tcase and tranny to just drill out one hole to put a heli coil in it. So Ill be down a whole additional month at least.

I'm fed up with my over heating issues so I gave up on chasing that gremlin for now, and I decided to tackle my newest upgrade....

Full Hydro Steering!:smokin:

Drilled the new high steer arms and got my truss mocked up and going.


Ran out mock arms with PVC pipe.


Ended up rolling up the truss a little further to get the arms up a little higher on the double sheer bolt.

Got all the truss support gussets welded in place.


Installed and painted.


Next cut the arms to length based on desired toe in and installed.




Next relocated my PS reservoir, closer to the PS pump.



Then installed an inline hydraulic filter and ran the orbital lines to the ram.


Then I had to stop once I was bleeding the system because I ran out of PS fluid to add... But I did get the wheels to turn in the right direction when the pressure built up enough. So I know I have the lines ran correctly

I gotta drive it to enjoy it. Haha. :flipoff2: still gotta figure out my over heating issues. And now I'm chasing why my fans won't turn on anymore...:shaking:

Since the over heating issues seems to be resolved I have started working on "fun" stuff.

Getting my cargo area drawer system going. Hoping to get it finished this week and then head over to the exhaust shop to get my exhaust pipe I had to cut to drop the tranny welded back together with a V- Band kit. Then near the end of August gonna go hopefully hit up a few trails to see what she can do!

Due for an update...

Hello yall. Back from the back pages here. Life is busy and now have 2 kids to contend with but things have gotten completed, however slight...

Well heres a little update. Still really havnt figured out the overheating issue, ended up ditching the egr valve and put in a few different thermostats to get it functioning semi normal. Havnt had the time to take it out wheeling or much of anything lately but it sure looks good sitting in the garage.

Some pics of things...

Painted the hood finally, and installed hood louvers to help control heat. Installed new LED headlights and side marker lights.




Finished rear tool tray system.



Finished the half doors. Still going to have to fidget with the latches a little I think.



Installed two quart holders to help secure things.



Started dealing with connecting my aftermarket heater core with the scouts original plumbing. Ended up plating off the original core face and put two new circular tabs to connect flex hose on to then connect to two holes built into a sleeve that goes over the factory under dash plastic box.




Built rear quarter panel rock sliders that I integrated into the frame and roll cage.




In an order to help get the engine cooler I bought a new plate style trans cooler and relocated it to underneath the scout. I had to cut a rock slider tube in order to get it under there. So I'll replace it with another detachable tube and cover the fan area with 1/4" steel plate.

And now since I couldn't track down my over heating issue I pretty much said fawk it and started selling shit I didnt need, in order to buy this....

2004 6.0L Vortec LQ4


And this... But I already sold it for more than I paid for it.



The issue I ran into was the 12 o'clock bolt hole on the Vortec series motors. The 4L60E I bought, didnt have that hole as it was made with a 5.7l in front. So I could make it work or just sell it. Ill wait until the correct one comes along and make it easier. Now an issue I'm thinking forward to is my current output shaft spline count on the 700r4 VS the TF727 I had in originally. I believed I used the rear 23 spline shaft out of the jeep TF727 I used for the 6 bolt round pattern tail housing. I'm debating on whether to use a 4L60E or if my splines on my KluneV arnt 23, to say screw it ditch the current adapter I have (700r4 4 bolt) to klune 6 bolt. And put in a 4L80E which could possibly fit without changing drive lines if I lost that inch from the current adapter.

But that brings up other issues. Klune V is no longer in business and so tracking down a 32 spline input to match a 4L80E could prove to be impossible.

Any who. I'll have to wait to deal with the trans when I pull my SBC. Heres more pics of stuff...

Got the 6.0l into the machine shop, hot tanked, decked and honed. Swapped out the dished LQ4 pistons for flat top LQ9 pistons.







Got a NNBS intake manifold off of an 08' 5.3L

Got the heads resurfaced, and I washed em. Installed new valve seats, re lapped the valves, installed LS3/6 blue valve springs. Still need to install bronze lifter bushings.

Last week went and picked up some scout 80 parts for scout254. And yes you do see a trans snuck in there. I went ahead and bought a 4L80E. My plan now is to sell SBC, 700r4 and Klune and purchase a Black Box I. I will keep my TC where it is now, and cut the 2wd 4L80E down to a 4wd. With that and the Black Box, my engine will only be pushed forward 1.5'. I believe my oil pan clearance will be just fine and I can fit the engine in behind the radiator just fine.

I didn't realize that until you mentioned it. Yes it will have to get some modification done to it. But I'll wait until its finalized!

I forgot to mention this part on the rebuild list. Stage 1 RV truck cam from Summit.



Got a little further with the trans cooler relocation. Found my old DOM tie rod was the same OD as the slider, so I placed that in there which shouldn't budge at all. And fabbed up a skid pan out of my old fold down tire carrier. Yes, Mechanos... you were right, it stuck out too far and in reality and in talking to Scouttanks, I highly doubt I would need a spare. So to save weight, I will build a double swingout tire carrier system to hold just jerry cans and some water cans out back.

Starting to look like an engine now. Ran my steam vent ports. Drilled and tapped the water pump and installed the hoses and fittings.



The harmonic balancer was a real pain in the ass to get bolted down. Just a lot of muscle. I was afraid the engine was gonna fall off the stand. Coils and brackets mounted. Nothing major but progress is progress.

Man, time fly's around here... Its hard to believe its been over a year since I last posted on my build. A LOT has happened. Ive been through a lot the past year, from a kid in the ER for weeks at a time, to getting a divorce, to moving to a different town, rebuilding my life and recuperating what I could with what little I could understand why things happened the way they did.

So I have recently decided once everything settled to get my scout back up on the priority list to get done.
