That's not a dumb question. The 2F manual says coolant capacity of the FJ40 with heater or air conditioning is 16.9 US quarts. The FJ60 is 17.4 quarts, FWIW. I use the Toyota red anti-freeze and mix it 50-50 with distilled water.

Morgan did you buy a cruiser dictionary off e-bay or something? You know some pretty random bits of info.

Just pour a gallon af antifreze in and fill the rest with water. It works well.

Nevermind that I just realized that you live in BC and that may not work. The wether is a bit different down here.

I don't think it's a stupid question either, I would use 50-50 as an index then adjust for potential outside ambient temps, i.e. colder temps 60 anti 40 water or warmer summer temps 40 anti 60 water. Water is the ultimate cheap heat transfer medium, but unfortunately it will rust your engine from the inside out, and expand and break stuff when frozen.

from what i've heard from the guy's nextdoor at the radiator shop, you should run about a 50-50 mix in winter and you can run straight destilled water in summer. the only thing antifreeze does for ya is to keep the water from freezing, does not really help the cooling any.
seeing as how you're in BC 50-50 is probably your best bet.

I always heard it helped protect the water pump and radiator from scaling up and corrosion as bad too. Id go with a 50/50 or close mix year round.

Straight water is a BAD idea.
Coolant, usually a 50/50 mix, lowers your freezing point....raises your boiling point...and lubricates the water pump as well as preventing corrosion from both rust and chemicals. (dissimilar metals in a solution often make the solution acidic) This is the case in coolant. Drop the probes of a volt meter in your coolant and you will get a slight reading. Having a slight memoery fart...But, I believe anything near 1 volt = change your coolant. It might be .1 volt. (waiting for the coffee to kick in:) )
My PowerStroke has a coolant additive that prevents air pockets from forming against the cylinder walls and creating a poor heat transfer. Kind of like "Water Wetter"
With out this additive, some PowerStrokes were known to form pin hole leaks in the cylinder walls..... BAD

Back to basics... 50/50 mix is standard.
Up to a 70/30 mix is allowable.
Anything richer reduces all benifits.
Even in Wisconsin (COLD) 50/50 prevents from freezing down to -34 deg. F (good enough)

Extended Life coolants (orange, "Dex-Cool")
last longer than the old green stuff and it is designed to work better with mult. metals and plastics a little better. Green and Orange should not be mixed. Either will accept approx 15% of the other without problems. (in case you need to top off)

Damn....It's Sat morn and I am only supposed to teach this stuff Mon-Fri <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Off my soap box...
