I'm a little confused about the dual Tcase setup.

I have a 84 Toy that has something wrong with the Tcase so while I'm messing with that I figured I might want to go dual. Well here is my ??s. Can I run the carb gear box up front with the shifter coming from the tranny and I'm assuming that the rear Tcase has to be one with the shifter in the top of the case? Is this correct or do I have to run both with the shifter in the top of the case and how does that affect my Tranny? Is there any difference between the 2 trannys or will the cases with the top mounted shifters mount right up to my tranny and what about the location in the floor where the shifter comes through? It seems like using a case with the top mounted shifter up front would call for a new hole for the shifter to go through. Is this the case or does the first gear box use the factory hole no matter what case I use??
Oh yeah I read through all 100 and something posts that came back on the search so please help me out.

Thanks
and sorry if none of this makes any since.

If you have a 'carb' box behind the trans, -ok- weld a small bar across the high/low shift fork soos you don't fall out of the gate------ you MUST use a 'EFI' top load box behind the adapter, and this will mean cutting another hole in the floor for the third stick. also-- the stock cross member won't work where it is-- must be moved back to the rear transfer case (the front shaft won't clear in the stock position).

Bare with me here.... What set-up are we looking for? What works? Currently I have an 84 Transfercase which other Case do I need? What is the difference w/the "carb" case...? Is it neccesary?? Will an 85 5spd replace an 84 4 speed? same length w/o moving the crossmember ...that is until the 2nd t-case? thanks man

First - forget ANYTHHING about "carb" and "EFI" Tcase terminology - it is just more confusing (and I will never understand why Marlin insists on doing that).

1. You either have a Tcase with the shifter in the transmission tailhousing

or...

2. You have a Tcase with the shifter in the top of the Tcase.

Regardless of which one you have, you will use your CURRENT Tcase as the "low range" donor case you take apart, and you will buy another Tcase like #2 and that will be your rear transfer case.

There is more info I could share, but it only serves to confuse matters more.

AFAIK - the break years for the trannies is between 83 and 84, so an 84 should have the same tranny length as the 85.

I'm pretty sure you can convert any reduction box from remote(carbed 5spd)to a top shifting style. Isn't that why Marlin sells the kit to do that?

Yup, I just went and checked, you can get a kit from Marlin to convert a remote shifting transfer case to a top shifting case for $65.

Yes, Marlin offers a conversion kit - basucally just using stock Toyota parts to convert the shifting design. No worries running the kit - just like factory

BTW - I kept my description above VERY simple to get my point across. Yes - you can convert the later cases, yes - EFI and carb does figure in to what style of case you have, yes - there are gear cut differences in the early cases, yes - there are flange pattern and size differences, etc...

But all that can be worked out AFTER you realize what style of case you need
