the school has...

Inert gas welding(TIG+MIG)-this is the course description..."Principles in welding aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel, and the maintenance, and operation of welding equipment."

I hope "principles" doesn't mean all talk from the instructor.

Tungsten inert gas welding-"Applications in aluminum, stainless and carbon steel welding using tig and mig methods."

Welding-gas and electric-no description

Which one will benefit my Jeep the most? <IMG SRC="smilies/jeep2.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> I want to get down and dirty right away so I don't want to take classes like "history of welding" and some other bullshhh like that. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

I'm not a welder....but here is my observations from reading about welding. If you plan on doing welds w/ an on board welder on the trail....that is DC (electric) welding. MIG/TIG (gas) are better ways to weld, but I don't believe you can MIG/TIG weld on the trail.

Again...I'm sort of talking out my arse here, but I'm in the same boat as you. I'm looking to take a class this year also. BTT for this thread.

You might be better off finding a experianced welder in your area, and bribe the guy teach you the basics for a day or two. You can probably learn how to weld in 15 min., but it can take years to understand heat, weld penitration, in some cases wire speed, when you should push or pull your bead, etc.
I learned the basics from my Grandpa about 8 years ago, and have been welding since, but infrequently, and I still have a lot to learn. It is a great skill to have if you own a jeep, and it can save some cash in the long run. PLus a guy can take much more pride in his rig if he fabbed his own stuff.

solid---the most user friendly type of welding that I've ever done ....especially on the trail....is the point and shoot type...(MIG)...more specifically MIG without the gas part. By using a flux core wire on a wire-feed. This simplifies the whole routine. (no hi pressure gas bottle, no regulator, and less effect on a breezy day). I might not have as much welding experience as some of you guys but on the actual trail I have hooked 2 batteries together and used 6011 rod to fix a clutch linkage.....used my Premier under the hood hi-freq stick welder to fix 3 or 4 tie-rods....used the MIG ReadyWelder to fix a bracket and a tie-rod....used a Century 131B totally portable flux MIG to fix a torn upper control arm bracket. I now carry my all time favorite welder with me on the trail rides .... My garage has a Millermatic 185.

im in the same situation with you man. i am taking a class called fundamentals of welding. i have done gas, arc, and maig welding. its been a few years and that was in 8th grade as well. so i signed up for the fundamentals class. it is 2 lecture hours and 3 shop hours per week. id say go and buy a nice mig welder take the class that way you can "study at home"

MIG is probably the easiest welding around, however... if you learn gas welding and arc welding theres no welding process you cant pick up and figure out. And if you're ever forced to weld with a couple batteries and a couple sets of jumper cables you can. both gas and stick are excellent skills to learn. and IMHO are ideal for learning the fundimentals of welding.

I took a class in college. It was called "Introduction to Manufacturing Process, Welding" with a 1 hour lecture and 3 hour lab each week. The class tought me all about the many types of welding so when poeple start talking about MIG, TIG, wire fed, 6011 weld rod, and gass sheilding I know what they're talking about. It also tought me that Wire Fed MIG welding with gass sheilding provides and awsome weld that's easy to do. "Stick" welding, DC trail welding, is the cheapest, but more difficult to control with questionable weld quality. TIG welding is the simplest from an equipment stand point, but requires lots of practice and may not be suitable for all applications. All this should be covered in the class. If the class has a lab section then it should provide an opportunity to try all these types of welding.

I think you'll find that MIG will be the most useful to you while working on your Jeep. I use MIG with shielding gas in my garage but spent a week at the Lincoln Motorsports Welding school learning TIG. TIG is a much slower, precise and more difficult process to learn. It produces the best results and can weld the most variety of metals.

The MIG+TIG class sounds like the ticket. Once you get into you'll see how each will benefit you.

By far MIG is the most valuable for you Jeep. The best part of learning it in a class, is that you have an endless supply of materials to screw up, rather than your vehicle and until you learn what the hell your doing, you will see that whole "looks ugly, but it'll hold" saying is a bunch on crap! Another benifit is that also after you learn enough, you can work on your projects in class and have all the resources that would be required to do it right the first time. In order, I would say MIG, Stick, TIG, Gas. Tig and Gas are very similar and require alot of patience (which I don't have), and stick is a good emergency weld to learn for the trail, but MIG, Keep It Simple Stupid(KISS).
