I just got this from DirtFirst!

DirtFirst! Action Alert

Moab Easter Jeep Safari - Urgent comments needed.
==================================================
OK folks the Off-road community is having a tough year!!! Let's see:
Rubicon Trail facing closures.
Surprise canyon - Closed
Glamis Dunes - major closure
California High Desert - 4,500 miles of dirt roads closed - that's 80% of them and 10.5 million acres.

Now it's the MOAB EASTER JEEP SAFARI. The greens are going after our GEMs folks.

Comments on the new Jeep Safari environmental assessment must be received at the Bureau of Land Management, Moab Field Office, 82

East Dogwood, Moab, Utah 84532 by 4:30 p.m., March 19, 2001.

Because time is short, we can email our comments to Brent Northrup at the Moab BLM office.
Send comments on this issue to him at:
[email protected]

SUWA has sent major comments in and wants this event dead. BLM has received very few comments from our side. SUWA wants the Safari

closed in a big way.
You will find a copy of the environmental document at their web site: http://www.blm.gov/utah/moab/ It may be viewed and

downloaded from there.

Of the alternatives, the worst one is the NO ACTION alternative. In effect, it means that there would be NO renewal of the EJS

permit. The BLM claims that it would not affect other OHV use. However, we have learned (the hard way) in all likelihood that it

will lead to additional closures and restrictions.

Please tell the BLM that you fully support continued permitting of the Easter Jeep Safari with no new restrictions or minimal new

restrictions.
Please - Tell them you are totally against the NO ACTION alternative!!!!

Thanks Guys,
damn this made my fawkin' day now!
I can't belive that you guys new before me!
I talked with these guys 2 weeks ago and they were really nice and cooperative! and we had an understanding that I would be notified, IN PERSON, if there was any more thought into this!!! Now I feel as though my whole other meaning was just lies!! (I HOPE they just simply forgot)

So thank you all that send in letters, this safari has been going strong for 30 + years.

I will be distributing the above LTR from JACK4X4 to all the buisnesses in MOAB that rely on the people and $$$ that EJS brings into our community!
I greatly appreciate all of your input to the BLM!!!

Here is a sample of what I sent, PLEASE feel free to cut and paste it. We need to get our say on this in!!!

Dear Sir,
My name is XXXXXX XXXXXXXXX and I live in XXXXX, XX One of my goals and dreams as an off-roader is to one day make the Easter Jeep Safari. I fully support continued permitting of the Easter Jeep Safari with no new restrictions or minimal new restrictions. I am totally against the NO ACTION alternative!!!! Through history once a area is shut down to motorized vehicles the environmentalists have pushed to have it closed to ALL mechanized and nonmechanized use. Thank you for your time.

Respectfully,

Sir,
I have read most of the EJS EA and would like to give you my input. I
would like you to approve the permit for the next five years, and again
after that.

There were statements in the EA that talked about trails in the
"wilderness". Wilderness in the "governmental designation" meaning is
an area without roads or trails, which means that this area does not
qualify as wilderness. To try to make a wilderness because one dislikes
the recreation of another is not part of the wilderness system, and
should be rejected.

On the other hand, the wilderness of most logical people, as opposed to
"shrill" pseudo-environmental groups (Rep Campbell), is the peace and
quiet, the view of nature that I can get taking my Jeep far into the
back country, including that area around Moab. Since I don't know the
area well, I must travel with those that are most knowledgeable in the
history, geology, and navigation in that area. Loss of the Easter Jeep
Safari would mean the loss of enjoyment of nature for not just me, but
literally thousands of Americans, the people who actually own the land.

Sincerely,

Keep on going guys!!! I have been talking to Moab Buisness Owners about this situation. Here is one simple fact! The Annual Jeep Safari brings the financial loss of winter in Moab back into control, so the Local Buisnesses here can survive. Being able to survive, helps you give your employees checks.
Now one can argue that the environment cannot be responsible for People to make money on at its loss, but that senario IS NOT HAPPENING! Be sure in your letter to mention that the BLM is currently doing an adequete job of managing the land, and support your stance. I have been born and raised in Moab UT. and have seen the effects of tourism on this town. The ACCTUAL JEEP SAFARI TRAILS, look (after every winter) the almost the same as they always have. The only major difference is that there are rocks put up all over to "Mark the Trail",and encoradge others to "stay on the trail".

After this issue gets solved, we will be organizing a group that will be watching S.U.W.A... this group will consist of all trail users and buisness owners who rely on the attraction of our outdoors for $$$. My plans are to organize and take action on a lawsuit for:
1: suits brought to the BLM for not managing the land properly (when they have been)
2: Slander/Distortion of facts to fraudulently stop the rights of americans for using the land which they own!
3: Fraudulently miss leading the BLM and courts to act on a cause that could make Moab Buisnesses lose MILLIONS in revenue!
4: Mail Fraud! (they forget that by comitting # 2 they are also commiting Mail Fraud!)

Thank you all for voicing your opinions to the BLM....

BTW JACK 4X4 will you e-mail me where you got this info at [email protected]
thanks
-Austin

Moab Austin: I'm trying to find the web page again. I stumbled onto it by accident searching for Environmental Studies of the Rubicon. As soon as I find it again I'll post the web page address.
