I already own a TJ that I am building up but have recently been tempted to the dark side by a toy. What sort of things do I need to look out for if I go and have a look at it in person? Does this seem well set up? does to me but then I only know jeeps. What else would need to be done to make it a hardcore trail rig? How would it go on-road? Could it be chopped to make it open and then put a full cage etc.
Price is around US$4500

Thanks guys

The 1977 FJ40 has a ss 454, 4 bolt, torker manifold, "special" cam, ovalport hand ported heads,850qjet carby,Flat top pistons, high vol oil pump, hand made extractors, 60 series springs with front shackle reversed, full cage, 75 series power steering, 4 wheel disc brakes, 8000 highmount, twin batteries mounted behind the seat, 120lt fuel tank, twin snorkels,
q78 swampers in the photo, but now fitting 38 " tyres, Bilstien shocks, Late 4speed and tranny case, 3 to 1 low range gears and a 96.5" w/base with front & rear ARB lockers.

Makes around 430hp, and 450 ft lbs, and gets 16mpg

1997? didn't know they made 40's that new.

a 454 seems a bit much for the stock tranny and tcase. those that have utilized that large an engine successfully, seem to have beefed up the other drive train parts some to handle the torque available with a 454. other than that, seems like a usable rig.

spare
set of g/box t/case/diff/35x12.5mud terrains as well as many other parts
if wanted.

Somehow he has managed to get good flex out of the leafs as well. hehe.

What would the upgrade path be for the tcase/tranny etc. to make it strong enough to support that sort of hp/torque? How would the axles hold up as well? infamous birfield joints? redline kit cost if that would be a problem? Wasn't there also an older Warn kit?

thanks for helping with all the newbie like questions

sounds and looks like a killer deal 2 me! as far as the redline or warn kits...the warn kit is discontinued and i personally think its cheeper to throw in a dana 44 than mess w/ the redline. just my opinion. sell the toy axle w/ the arb and youd prob be able to pay off a used 44 easy. i guess...im talkin from a second hand perspective, i havent done this. hope that helps a bit

ding, ding, ding, give a prize to the lucky man. He mentioned he might be selling it on a mailing list so I thought I would ask a few toy related questions to see what I think. The only thing is my TJ is only a tuch smaller on 35's. No v8 though...hehe

Sounds like a pretty good deal.

Don't throw rocks now......

If you're concerned about the drivetrain why not pull the motor and put in a diesel? Then you're not as likely to break stuff from the big block and you get an excellent engine for a cruiser.

You couldn't build it for $4500 if someone gave you a stock rig to start with. It sounds like a steal to me.

pretty hard to find any axles - dana ones anyways. Donor vehicles are very thin on the ground down here in Oz.

Got a few more specs for the rig, it is running Q78's at the moment but apparently can fit 38's. Anyone know how high a 44gallon drum is and if there is a way to work out an RTI from the 97" wheelbase x the drum height?

FJ40

ss 454, 4 bolt, torker manifold, "special" cam, ovalport hand ported heads,850qjet carby,Flat top pistons, high vol oil pump, hand made extractors,
60 series springs with front shackle reversed,
full cage,
75 series power steering,
4 wheel disc brakes,
8000 highmount,
twin batteries mounted behind the seat,
120lt fuel tank,
twin snorkels,
q78 swampers in the photo, but now fitting 38 " tyres,
Bilstien shocks,
60 series g/box and t/case [rebuilt] with 2.3 to 1 l/r gears and 411 diffs
Toyota hzj rear with arb locker, and toyota front with arb locker
96.5" wheel base.

Fit hzj 75 cv's to help beef the axles up.

16mpg

yep, still has cv's, this is second 40 Ive had, never broken a 40 cv yet,
but in the states quite common, front locker breaks them

60 series g/box and t/case [rebuilt] with 2.3 to 1 l/r gears and 411 diffs

Revolver shackles would add about 6" travel

The shorty drives really well, handles well, stops well, and climbs well, we have
extended the wheelbase to 97 inches, 60 series springs, and large bush hangers

cheers

That sounds like Darren McRae's 40. He's on the 80 series list.

Oops. I see after reading the rest of the thread that it IS Darren's .
