85' pickup
I was told that I can drive my truck around (not in 4wd) without the diff being installed. Is this true? If so, can I leave the birfields in or out? If I leave them in won't they clank around? I am doing this because this is my only vehicle and I am getting 5.29's and a lockrite installed this weekend

Yes you can, but you cannot leave the birfs in. I did it to get home after blowing up the rear.

I need a clear answer please! yes or no - with or without birfields in it? I am going to seal the diff hole with a piece of cardboard to keep it clean. Please a straight forward answer.

Pull the birfs and shafts out, and you can drive without a front diff.

Actually... if you wanted to 'really' jimmy rig it... you could wedge some cardboard or something in the axle housing to keep the axles from bouncing around too much and keep them from trying to spin (fat chance with the hubs unlocked but possible). You would have to be creative though.

Remember that when you turn, your birfields are bending and there will need to be a little slack for your axle.

At this point I would just take them out and call it safe.

Yes it can be done. Yes they will clank around (unless you jimmy rig them). No, it is not recommended by the apparent consensus of the board (including myself).
