It's finally time! (full width's and long arms)

So here comes my jeep evolution story:
I have always been a fan of 4x4’s for as long as I could remember. My first car at 16 was an 89 ranger 4x4 that I bought. It had about 7” of lift and cheap 33’s. I thought it was the biggest truck in the world. Then throughout my life have had bronco 2’s a cj5, and finally got a grand cherokee in late 2000. I had no intention of really wheeling it, luckily I got into a good 4x4 club shortly after I got it, and the rest is history.

I got it completely stock in nov 2000 and by jan 2001 it had a set of 31” thornturds and some coil spacers. I bolted on a set of rocksliders and took it to royal blue for its maiden voyage. I had no idea what I was getting into, never really been on a real trailride before in any of my previous 4x4’s. I was extremely unprepared. Didn’t bring any spares, tools, blanket or even a pillow (had to sleep in the back of the jeep), I didn’t even bring any lunch.


Since then I have wheeled it mostly on 32” bfg mt’s and a rear lockrite. Stock axles and a 3” skyjacker 1” spacer lift. It did very well on most trails I went on. Still was my daily driver at this point.

I have to say thanks to a few people (in no particular order):
my wife for being supportive, more at some times, less at others ;)

my friend jerry for some pointers and assistance along the way

So I happened to win a set of 35’s for working the erocc events. Found a junkyard 9”, then a few months later a hp ford 44 with the weld on wedges.
Finally saved enough for claytons long arms. I knew I didn’t want to weld the rear 4link truss on my d35 to just cut it off and put on the 9”. So I just put the front arms on and wheeled it like that for about a year and a half. Btw, I took the weld on stuff over to a friends house to weld it on, drove home and installed the arms in my driveway. This kit is cool like that, you can put it together a little at a time if you need to.

I knew I didn’t want to run 30 year old guts, so replacing all the gears and stuff has taken a while. I had to buy a piece here and there. We had a baby last year, so that took a lot of time away.

So I finally had enough of the axles together to tear the jeep apart.

so finally this weekend i got around to tearing it apart. pulled it in the garage saturday morning and worked on and off saturday and sunday for about 8-9 hours total.

i hate to see it go, but im glad its gone. i never broke anything in it, even with the lockrite, just carried spare shafts just in case.

and just for fun, and a little motivation. these arent at ride height obviously, but the wheelbase is about where i want it. i think i ended up moving it back about 3-4"

i know i left alot out. but i didnt want this to turn into a novel. so ...... whatever.

my goal for this rig is to #1 not turn into a trailer queen. i dont mind towing occasionally when i ever get a tow rig. but for now i dont have one, or a trailer. so i want it to be able to drive 2-3 hours to a trail. since thats about how far away most are from here.
and #2 have a nice sized trail rig with enough interior room for our family and gear.
#3 not hack it all up so i can avoid #'s 1 and 2 (example- not chopping the roof off)
i want a nice well balanced trail rig that can handle short trips and camping/wheeling off the beaten path.

yea i plan on it. was definitely going to do it in the front. wasnt sure about the rear. i still need to get some 3/16 to do it with. im going to try and make some cardboard templates for that today.

i got a few little things done today. worked on new bearings on the new 31 spline shafts. got the rear links and truss tacked up. set the pinion at ~15 degrees.

Are you lower links set directly on the axle tube centerline?
Pic makes it hard to tell..... If they are, thats a big no-no. If they are not....ignore my post.

What's this big no-no you speak of... you've mentioned it in two threads today and I've never heard of it before....

Well, I just did a little research and it appears Im wrong...Sort of.

But I was to understand setting links at the absolute centerline creates infinate forces. This would cause link, joint, and tab/bracket failure. And I was to understand no matter what you did or what materials you used, the forces would be to great and would destroy above mentioned.

Now speaking with a higher edjucated 4-linker, it appears Im right in it creating additional forces, however they are not infinite apprently. So at this point, Im gonna wait till someone else chimes in and shoots me down or adds to how I understood it.

Well, bout an hours research and a little calculator experimenting and Ill go ahead and shoot myself down.
Seems my thoughts are based on old folk loar only. Which tweaks my noodle because although I didnt kill myself preventing this, I did revamp a lot to avoid the axle centerline.

Heres what I can report based off playing with 4-link calc numbers. Specifically Vector Calculations. Raising lower links to or above the centerline does increase forces quite a bit. Not by tens of thousands of pounds or to and infinite amount as I thought, but it does increase. I discovered an inch and a half can increase the "x" forces by up to 1200lbs. Thats quite a bit if you ask me. But then again, with my original force at 6900 and a theoretical new force at 8100...its really not a big deal.

So with that being said, Ill go ahead and give MYSELF one of these... :shaking: ..... and one of these.... :flipoff2: .....

However If anyone can add to this, Im always up for learning.... Sorry If i caused any confusion. Please continue with your regularly scheduled work. :p

yes, they are as high as i could get them, well at least not hanging below the axle. that was the point. i know this kit installed on stock axles obviously hangs well below the axle with alot to get hung up on - including shock mounts. i didnt want anything hanging down like that.

as far as i have ever heard theres nothing wrong with it. i have seen many others mounted like that. i plan on running gusstes on each side, and plating the bottom. so it will get 'boxed' a little i guess. plus its 1/4" material. im pretty confident in that.

but i appreciate the information. ill definitely let you know how it holds together.
