I have a 4.0 and Ax15 in my 99 TJ with about 78,000 miles. The motor runs great and the tranny, while a little noisy, works well. I plan to replace the tranny next year for a lower first gear. I can't imagine letting the straight 6 go. It is durable and it makes 85% of its torque at idle - very nice for crawling.

I had about 137,000 on my 88XJ when I traded it in for my 92 YJ. Ran strong when I traded it in and my AX-15 that I just took out of my YJ worked perfectly with 121,000. A friend of mine has 164,000 on his 90 XJ.

Strong engines if they are maintained properly.

128K w/4.0 and AX-15 on my 96, 140k on father-in-law's 96 motor. No motor/tranny probs with either yet, both running strong. On a 90, you might wanna check the condition of the cooling system (still had the closed system, IIRC), and make sure the vacuum-disco on the front axle is operating properly.

189,000 miles on my 4.0l and AX15. Wouldn't trade it for the world.

The engine has just a trace of the famous piston slap. The transmission is rock solid, and still shifts great.

Made 2 trips from Chicago to Moab towing a 1 ton pop-up.

I've got 150k on my 4.2. It's started to get a little tired, but it still runs pretty strong. Just some valve noise.

A buddy of mine has 230k on his 92 YJ 4.0. He says its getting tired though. He wants to do a stroker. Who doesnt?

I got right at 100g's before my shit bit the dust. Grinding in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, then couldnt get it in any gear whatsoever, with the clutch all the way down and violently jamming the shifter in any gear resulted in nothing....just felt like everything was jammed.

Although my 4.0 has treated me quite well....has 108k on it and running strong.

My AX 15 started going out at 70,000. The 4.2L lasted for 180,000. It may have lasted longer if I had not made a couple too many passes through the mud pit.
