Here's a quote from the BLM site...

Recently, OHV use in the Weber Creek area has increased, causing noticeable damage to botanical resources. The confluence of the South Fork American River and Weber Creek has become a weekend party spot for young people. OHV use and the parties at the river have resulted in severe erosion, destruction of riparian vegetation, and litter. Residents of an adjoining subdivision are concerned with the possibility of a wildfire being ignited. Vehicle access to this area will be addressed both by the Pine Hill Preserve management administrators and the BLM South Fork of the American River planning process.

Not saying I told you so but perhaps now people will understand why I get upset when people post about the trail on the board! That was almost a completely unkown trail except for a few locals now we've got people coming up from the bay to run a 1 mile trail that is basically a dirt road... <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0">

I totally agree with keeping the trail on the down low. But I have grown up in the area and have probably been on every trail thats local but not Jergens. Everyone is finding out about it so lets treat it like any other trail and attempt to fix the problem without having the road closed. Cleanups, bypass work, etc... I still would like to go down there sometime

I agree with keeping it a secret. There is, was a trail in the Santa Cruz Mountians that was abused by people. It has now been completly blocked for about 8 years. Only way to go on it now is on a mountain bike.

Every time I see a post about Jergens I think about Rattle Snake Gulch
<IMG SRC="smilies/mad.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0">

Isn't Jergens what was refered to as the "secret Pitate Trail" If so it is too bad it did not stay that way.

BTW I have never been there so I am not one of the CLOWNS from the Bay Area.

Trail elitism isn't the solution, IMHO... and though publicizing this trail certainly increased the resource load, the actual impact could have been decreased by users exercising minimal-impact camping, and working with the land managers, as well as the folks in the neighboring subdivision. More balanced use could have made a net REDUCTION in impact, even with more users...

I have talked to the folks in the subdivision (THEY attend the planning meetings!) -- their concerns speak less to organized 'wheeling groups than disorganized individuals and local kids. One fella made the excellent point that a club of organized peers have accountability to each other and their club... vs. a few idiots goofing off by themselves, who will do whatever they want without the moderating sense of a community.

If we want to keep this trail open, we need to attend the management meetings... I did for a while but trailed off... I just haven't had the bandwidth.

I would be happy to work with a few individuals to renew attendance to these meetings on a rotating basis, but I can't do it all on my own.

Wow I really never looked at it in that way. I did think about it when I was there about how nice it was. When we went there wasn't any trash. Far as Partys go and stuff only been there once.. And didn't drive in the Creek nor to the water fall. Stayed on the trail.

Randii put me on list to rotate. While in Utah we had to be very careful with our areas and work with all local groups to keep the greenies at bay. I'll be more then happy to attend meetings, pleae keep me in the loop. And you know I'm a busy guy, but land must be kept open. Public land must remain Public land.....

Hey, those people in that subdivision can kiss my ass. They only want exclusive use of the conflunce. These people are and have been for many years been N.I.M.B.Y.s. <IMG SRC="smilies/pissed.gif" border="0">

A mail from the BLM:

Hi Randy, BLM is now ready to discuss the Norton Ravine and Pine Hill Parcels for the South Fork American River Management Plan. Our next meeting is Thursday night from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Odd Fellows House in
Coloma. I hope you and your riders can come to our meetings.
We will discuss the issues surrounding these parcels and begin to develop a Goal Statement for Norton Ravine and Pine Hill. Not everything will be decided on the Pine Hill parcels because of the MOU agreement with the other managing agencies who have a say on how the public lands will be managed for the Pine Hill Preserve. Issues that are non-threatening to the plants will be resolved in this planning process. Hope to see you there.
JIM

This is put up or shut up time... who's gonna go with me? As I've mentioned before, this is NOT just a single meeting... it is a series of them. We need to put in a presence at each meeting... mail me: [email protected] if you can pitch in to this effort.

Here's a few related threads on the planning process: http://www.pirate4x4.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=12&t=000049 http://www.pirate4x4.com/ubb/Forum10/HTML/004809.html

In a nutshell: the BLM is in the midst of a multiple-month community-based planning project on the South Fork of the American River, including the areas off Jurgens Road.
I've attended most of the meetings, but we really do need more than one guy there in support of motorized recreation, especially as we enter this particular site's planning phase. If anyone wants to weigh in on this issue, they should attend NOW. Part of this process is establishing 'standing,' by attending the meetings and establishing familiarity with the other folks there.

If you are serious about attending, please contact me ASAP: [email protected] (hit my work email, too: [email protected]) -- I can offer a ride up the hill from Sacramento or discuss some of the issues so we can present a united front.

Don't come if you want to pitch a fit and start a fight... we need to stay sane and reasonable.

This one will be down at the Odd Fellow's Hall, in town. Look for the BLM sign right on the inside of the 90-degree turn by the park.

Awesome -- I understand being busy -- my attendance slipped recently, as well... glad to see more folks pooling up interest!

I'll see if I can get my dad to attend in my absence. I'd love to go but between work and other less fortunate issues I'd rather not discuss I can't make it.
