Judge upholds firing of Park Police’s Chambers

An administration judge at the Merit Systems Protection Board has upheld the firing of former U.S. Park Police Chief Teresa Chambers.

In an Oct. 6 ruling, MSPB Judge Elizabeth Bogle said the Park Service had a legitimate reason for disciplining Chambers for making statements to the media and Congress about her agency’s budget and staffing problems. The Park Service placed Chambers on administrative leave in December and fired her in July.

The Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, a group of employees at environmental and land-management agencies that is leading Chambers’ legal defense, said it will appeal the ruling to the full board.

“Public servants should not be fired because they tell the truth,” PEER General Counsel Richard Condit said in a statement. “The judge made several errors of law and leaps of logic that will not stand up under review.”
