It seems as though my truck is lacking in low end power. The upper end is fine, and pulls well. The problem is when leaving from a stop I have to nurse it a little, and it bogs easily pinging when it does. I just replaced the cap, rotor, spark plugs, and checked timing. I just added 31s and a rear locker, so this would have a little to do with it. Any help is appreciated. Tom

There was quite a difference in power when I had 31's. New gears solved that though.

i would look for exhuast or vaccuum leaks or the non-operation of a vaccuum switch, in turn making you run rich. my exhaust is a header with 2.25pipe a 40 series flow and 2.5" short tailpipe.......the MINUTE i get an exhaust leak at the collector.....it gets doggy between 2k and 3k rpms then pulls fine up top. i think that the 02 sensor gets weird readings.i just spent $100 and 2 months and countless hours and gas trying to figure this out. its worth a shot. someone feel free to jump in and correct me on the vaccuum part tho.........

advance the timing until it pings, then back it off a notch. also a k&n filter , plus the little things already done should make it burn rubber!

If its pinging retard the timing a little. You really should have no trouble turning 31's. I noticed a power loss when I had them on my truck but it was very minimal

The vaccuum idea makes sense, but where do you look/check? Did you have a vaccuum meter?
Mine has a cam, pulls ok above 2500, but WHERE the fawk is MY low end power too? I'm running 31s, but my SR5 p/u I had 33s without a cam, and it pulled much better than my runner, and it has 31's, but no GO below 2500..........

sounds like you have a problem. i have 32 tires and i have barely lost any power. actually i had a lot of low tork before from the k&n filter and 2.25 inch exhaust. i still have the 4.10 gears too. have you ever changed the fuel filter? that helped my truck a lot. they are kind of a pain to change though. have you used any injector cleaner. i run a bottle through about once a month.

Is it a 22RE? I assume it is, since it's an '86 'Runner. Have you checked your Throttle Position Sensor?

I just went from 225s (28") to 31s, and the difference was very minimal. Less than I remembered when I went from 235s (29") to the same set of 31s on my old '83 22R. 22RE has more low-end than a 22R.
