My '85 4runner is leaking a tar-like substance from (what looks like) bellhousing area. It looks like a regular puddle of gear/motor oil, but is like sap or tar, in that I have to use a scraper to clean it off the driveway. It does not seem to leak when warm, but when cold like when it's parked for a while or mostly about 10-15 min. after it has been driven. I also noticed a little bit of clutch 'shimmy'(?), and think maybe oil is leaking on the clutch and may be coming out from there. Help?

Any ideas why the oil is so thick? I thought maybe if oil was leaking onto clutch, maybe it was mixing with 'clutch dust'(if there is such a thing), which would maybe cause it to be thick? It may sound gay, but it's all I could think of.

actually, I don't mind taking things apart at all. It's the reassembly part that always gets to me
