Lincoln Locker just put in tonight. I am just waiting till tomorrow for the silicon to dry before filling it with fluid. It will be trail tested on Saturday on a pretty mild trail (the AZ Crown King run). Hope it holds up.
Does it look good to you guys? It was welded at Kong's 4x4.

Ya know, thanks for the pics. I've never seen a welded diff, and couldn't visualize what was to be welded, and where. Now it makes total sense.

So I filled 'er up with some gear oil this afternoon and took it for a spin. Wasn't quite expecting that much tire sqealing, but I found the secret. The faster you go around corners, the less they squeal. It lightens up the inside tire the faster you go. I also did a few donuts in the dirt lot by the house, that's kinda cool.

So what are some "tricks" to this mod? I see the plate but that seems to be a PITA. So do you clean the gears extra good? Welld REALLY hot or just hot? I would guess one pass but how thick of weld? Any particular rod better than another? Hella way to get a trail spare diff. Got a friend that can setup gears and then weld the piss outa em.
BTW Like pic #1&2 but an't see the welds well in #3 or is thatto show off your cylicone?

how is cutting down a peice of flat stock to fit between the spider gears a pain in the ass??? it might be more troble then just welding the gears together but it is a hell of a lot stronger. Also why setup gears then weld? you wouldnt be able to get to all the spiders and you would risk focking up your new gears

here is what I'm gonna do

Well the plate wasn't that hard to do. Slight bend in it to form with the gears then some notching around the gears.

Nothing most people couldn't handle. And yes I made sure I washed and waxed the gears thoroughly before welding. It's just wire welded with stainless I believe. And you should probably do the welding before you setup the gears.

I have done plenty of rear ends and never waited for the silicone to dry. No need and no leaks. If you use a gasket it will almost allways leak.

Mark, the seals for the axle don't seem to be leaking. They fit in there, but kinda funny. There was an extra lip on the seal that kinda rolled back as the brake backing plates were reinstalled. (Hard to explain)
I was just being careful about the silicon drying. I didn't know if it would leak or not. But it wasn't like I was in a hurry to fill it anyways. But I will know for next time, if I need to fill and drive, its all good.

Is it a good idea to weld up the front? I have a Detroit in the rear of my 82, open up front. I am looking for a budget locker up front. I can swap the the open 3rd back in for winter driving. I could just unlock the hubs for tight turns. What do you guys think?
